I stopped by my frinedlt neighborhood Honda shop yesterday to touch base with the owner. We're not close friends, but he's an honest guy, has some good mechs working there, and the guy at the counter is tops. When I pulled up I saw a VTX sitting under the awning, a 1300, and it had a car tire on it. A 205 75R15 to be exact. This was interesting to me, as I'm about to make that jump myself on my I/S in the Fall. And I had discussed it before with the shop owner. He saw me come in, pointed at the VTX outside the window, and said "I knew you'd see that.."
There was a gentleman sitting at the counter, I assumed it was the owner of the VTX. I was curious about the bike and I asked the man at the counter if he was the owner. "Hell no!", he says. Then the shop owner told me it had been dropped off for some scheduled servicing, and the owner had gone off to run some errands, and would pick up the VTX later.
I reminded the shop owner that he had said he would mount my C/T for me, and the guy sitting there says to the shop owner, "And you damn well better make him sign a release so he doesn't sue your ass when that tire runs him off into the ditch!"
SO I tried to explain to this guy that the appropriate car tire, if mounted and inflated properly, is really very reliable, and safe. He would have none of it. Said I would surely waste a perfectly good motorcycle by wrecking it with a car tire. That there was no way a car tire was gong to handle a steep turn on a heavy bike. I tried again to tell him that I was familiar with several people who have been running car tires on their motorcycles for years, many long distance riders, and many who frequent those 'curvy' places..
He shook his head and said, "Nosiree, there ain't no way that can work safely'.
I looked at the shop owner and he says, "So, when you bringing it in?" I told him in the FAll, and I'd be buying a new front tire as well, and I asked him if I could come in when he does the work so I can look at the splines. He said no problem, I thanked him and told the other gentlemen good day, and walked out.
There are some people in this world that aren't going to listen, no matter what. What a miserable way to go through life..

I suspect we're all bull headed about SOME THINGS.  I usually won't tell a stranger he's a dip crap, unless he starts it.

On the rare ocassion that I get someone that won't let well enough alone, I invite them to come on a twisty road ride with me.  They'll see.

Sometimes I throw them Smokin'Joe pics dragging stuff on the dragon from Killboy.com.

Like you said though... SOME people will not even listen to any counter arguement.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A car tire hater may have converted abiker to look into a CT. Last week while at Ruidoso NM rally . I pull in beside a 1800 at a eating place. The owner of the bike was standing beside his bike and I got to talking to him and mention . I was running a car tire He said he has a mechnic shop and it was wrong and I was asking for trouble. I told him it was pretty well proven to be ok because a lot of 1800 rider were doing it and had logged a lot of miles and wore out a lot of tires and there had been no major castashposic caused by the CT. He still claimed We were headed for trouble.
I just left and and was standing in front of restruntant waiting to go inside to eat. I noticed several bikers come by my bike and the biker that I had the descussion with were telling them about the ct . They were on thier knees looking at the tire on my bike. While eating I notice one of the bikers eating too. So when I was leaveing I stopped and ask him what he thought about the ct. He was real interested about it and had all kind of questions . After talking to him about the ct and telling him I was pleased with it I left.
The next morning after eating breakfast at another place . Iwas in the parking lot and the fellow that was asking the questions about the ct shows up with a another bikers He had to look and had all kinds of question about the ct.I told them to look on the darkside webb site and they could find all kind of imfo. They both left very interested and were going to do some more research.
I guess the ct hater should have kept his mouth shut . Instead of showing everybody that went by ,my ct and that I was headed for trouble. He may have coverted a couple of new biker to CT.

Tires are religion. I've had that same discussion except it wasn't car tires...it was brands of MC tires.

Like oil, the emotional investment folks put into the issue just isn't worth it.

Ride 'em hard. Fix 'em when they break.

Thank you Danial, I was about to post up that guys and thier choice of oil, what to use,

filter that is THE ONE KIND, and how long to run said Oil and Filter before you change it.

Is almost like a religion.

In America's built in obsolesence of products, you probably just change the filter every 5 thousand

add oil as required and get just as much service out of your ride as the guy who

changes oil every 2 thousand miles.

And never crack the drain valve.

But oil is cheap and why not change it regularly.

We are on the same page.

Car Tire, Bald Tire, Motorcycle Tire, Knobby Tire, it's all good just don't get hurt trying to

prove one is better than the other.

Biggest plus on a Car tire is the fact . that under most conditions, all things being equal

it will last quite a bit longer.

But from everything I have read and heard , the Splines need Greasing about every 10 thousand

on a Valk.

so why would you want to pull that whole assembly off just to grease and not change the tire.

End of story.

+1. Most have an opinion on tires, oil, religion, politics, seats, windshields.....etc. Most have a large emotional investment in that opinion. Most, can't be changed to "flip" to either side....once their minds are made up. Most of the time, no good will come from debating/arguing about this side...or that side......... tickedoff

First time I went into a shop for a Valkyrie tire, I told the proprieter that I needed a rear tire for my Valkyrie.  He asked me if I had heard about people putting car tires on them.  I said that I had.  That was enough.  I was in for a 10 minute lecture on the evils of the dark side.  I hadn't asked for a dark side tire.  I hadn't even brought it up.  He still harangued me for 10 minutes.  "Look, bud.  All I wanted was a tire.  Not a lecture!"
