just going by smell. Is there a speck available, or any ideas to check and adjust?

That may or may not be actually happening.

What is your actual gas mileage for the bike.

That would be a place to start.

Have you an aftermarket exhaust?  Maybe modified stock exhaust?

What has been done if anything to the carburetors?

You get the idea.

A bit more information would help a lot.

Finally, in an enclosed area, the exhaust fumes can seem to be very potent and may influence you to think the bike is running rich because it's making your eyes water.

Are you using the choke to excess? That may do what you are experiencing!

Do you know what,if anything, has been done to the bike?? Like maybe a switch from 35 to 38 lows??  All that said,, if its burning your eyes after a few minutes but keeps on running,, its probably normal.. If it still idles smooth and runs well,, run it..

When you think it is running rich, let it run for few minutes, then stop the bike an pull a plug or two.

Use this to determine if it's actually rich or not: http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_support/spark_plugs/faqs/faqread.asp

I think most all Valks more or less have that smell, at least the ones I've been around.

Easy is having a friend who has a exhaust gas analyzer the type they use on DMV inspections to run your bike. Next is just lean the idle screws and see how it runs. But you haven't said how your idle is smooth, rough is the only complaint the smell? If it is rich and you lean the idle screws you may find the bike running better.

Leave the bike alone and just ride it.

Anytime you are in an enclosure, like a garage or lean to, you will smell exhaust fumes.

Ya don't have a catalytic convertor on it like ya do your car.

Bike idles smooth, stock exhaust and I have not touched the carbs. Gas mileage is around thirty, but I have a heavy right hand. This is not a new problem, but was mentioned to me while i pulled into a local tavern and a buddy of mine mentioned that the bike smelled rich. My answer was it does run rich at an idle.
By the way I never start the bike in my garage and  try to use the choke minimally.

I like the advice: Leave the bike alone and just ride it!

I agree with Valkpilot.  It would take very little effort to let the bike idle for a few minutes then pull a couple of plugs.  30 mpg sounds very low, since I usually get around 40 mpg and I don't ride slow.

I'm NOT calling anyone a liar . . .  but how in the world do you get 40 mpg? Wow! Do you stay off the throttle? And, if yes, how do you do that on a VALKYRIE!?!? Now if you tell me you drag race crotch rockets street light to street light and get 40 mpg, then yes, I'm calling you a liar!

I got 38 mpg once. . . I think I was not feeling well or something. I average between 32 and 36, but closer to 32. . . .

With that report I would leave it alone too. It sounds like all is well and your mileage is good forget about it. cooldude

I get 40MPG consistently, open hwy riding between 65-70 on my Interstate. The Tourer, about 38MPG. I/S is '99, Tourer is 2K. You will find that most get around these figures, unless they really push it above 70MPH.

Yup!

40 mpg around town and interstate, all the time.

Get a little better on the highway, steady traveling (throttle) 41 mpg to 42 mpg.

Jack it up to above 3300 rpm's and the mileage suffers a loss of about 3 to 4 mpg.

Did I mention . .  that I'm  . . . a 'tad' heavy? Still, I thought mid-30's was the normal for a Valk? Cheesy

A 6 degree trigger wheel or a 4 on an I/S will improve your mileage, so will the ECT mod.
Of course the right wrist will be the determining factor.

Boy, I`m running way "RICH" or I don`t know how to fig. MPG.  Every once in a while I will get a 40 MPG and wonder what the hell I did. I ran above 3,000 rpm`s for the trip home from the Whisky Run and got about 33 MPG.  Normanly I will get about 34-38 MPG the way I ride, and that is not flogging this sh## out of the Jade Lady. Which I would never do, cause she is my "HOME" away from home. Damn, I need "help"  Embarrassed

So I did an experiment yesterday, On my round trip to work, I drove very mellow, never exceeded 3200 RPMs. No quick starts and got 34.83 mph. Fueled up to the same spot in the tank and used Sonoco regular. 1997 standard, windshield, Baker Air Wings, Dark Side Cooper Zeon Sort A/S 105 55 16

I don't think you can compare tank to tank and get an accurate reading of fuel mileage.  There are too many variables when doing that.

That is very true!

You have got to run through three or four tanks of gasoline to get an accurate figure.

That way if you miss by a cup or so of gasoline it will not skew the final figure by much at all.

My last was figured on 2,500 miles.

I think you're in the same ball park as most Valk riders' mileage.  Low to mid-thirties is pretty typical, falling below 30 when pushing it hard, especially in the wind.

Rode it like I stole it yesterday, same trip as before but with Friday going to the country traffic. Ran it like a raped ape when the road opened up (How many more metaphores can I use?). Paced  (not raced) some little sports cars for about 11 miles, very fast!  30.45 MPG. End of science project!

Yup, I know what you mean.

Love them fast cars!

In my early days they were called "bear bait"

They are the ones who get the speeding tickets!
