There have been several posts recently asking how the Valk matches up against other bikes.  Of course, the model makes a big difference, as Honda built about five different versions from a performance standpoint.

Both models of the ‘97s made considerably more power than the three subsequent models.  The Tourer’s windshield absorbed lots of power, especially at higher speeds.  And the Interstate’s weight, even with the bump in power from the timing advance and lighter carb springs, extracted a performance penalty.

So I got out an old scanned copy of MCN that compared 3 Valks as well as a 1500 and 1800 Wing.  I have my reservations about some of their numbers, like the 1500 Wing’s top speed.  Maybe there was a tailwind.  But it sure looks like a ’97 Standard wouldn’t get embarrassed by a GL1800, at least in a straight line (the 1800 is an amazing handler and would be my choice in the twisties).  Even some of the new big inch V-Twins might be surprised.

Interesting numbers, thanks.

Appears to be a couple of areas that should be retested.

Maybe we could have the next Inzane near a drag strip and verify some of the numbers!

Top speed of 118 my "eye". I've been well over that myself on my 2000 Tourer with plenty more left before I chickened out!    uglystupid2 crazy2

It’s common for Honda speedometers to be a little “proud” at speeds over 60 MPH.  I have to go an indicated 65 MPH to actually go 60.  I mapped out my speedometer’s accuracy a few years ago.  It seems to indicate about 3-5 MPH higher than actual up to 60, then gets worst the faster you go.  The top speed I tested was 135+ indicated, and the GPS showed 120.  That’s about a 13% error on the high side.

That was a test I only wanted to do one time!   Shocked

Not so sure about those 0-60 times also. I think they may be a bit generous.

I have a 97. I changed out the springs to Interstate springs, I also swapped the ICM to an interstate and have done the 6 degree mod. The difference is amazing in how much smoother and stronger it pulls.

However...

I had a ST1300 which was rated at 0-60 in 3.9sec. and it would blow the doors off of my Valk any day of the week  and never break a sweat.

Interesting reading though.  Thanks.
