Here is an excerpt from the article. Link to the full article at the bottom of the post. ---------------------------------- With the fall hunting season fast approaching, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Lisa Jackson, who was responsible for banning bear hunting in New Jersey, is now considering a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) – a leading anti-hunting organization – to ban all traditional ammunition under the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976, a law in which Congress expressly exempted ammunition. If the EPA approves the petition, the result will be a total ban on all ammunition containing lead-core components, including hunting and target-shooting rounds. The EPA must decide to accept or reject this petition by November 1, 2010, the day before the midterm elections. ---------------------------------- http://www.nssfblog.com/epa-considering-ban-on-traditional-ammunition-take-action-now/

The NRA-ILA has addressed this issue. I agree with them that the ban will probably go nowhere. Even if this kooky petition is considered, and lead in ammunition is banned, bullets can also be made of tin alloys. While not having the same mass, a tin alloy bullet can still be effective. http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?ID=6004

She has already proven she is not a friend to sportsman. Marty

I agree that it probably will not go anywhere, but the fact that they are seriously considering it really bothers me. Its kinda a end run around play and restricting ammunition to the public and obsoleting alot of long guns. As for the tin alloy. Copper bullets are effective too, but I cast bullets and its hard to cast things other than lead. In addition losing mass would really effect long range shooting and high power rifles in several ways. It would really shelve most hunting rifles because the twist rate (to stabilize a bullet) is set for a certain mass of projectile. The "Greenhill Formula" is how barrel twist rates are calculated for bullets. All that would be out the window. Pure copper bullets are fairly close to lead core but I dont shoot them because I cant calculate external ballistics for them as accurately as for lead or lead alloy core bullets.

If you can't make your own bullets out of lead, that will be step one to control ammunition!

yea just like the primers they tried to saddle us with that had a shelf life of about 5 years before they became inert... Ive got hundreds of pounds of lead. A smelter, dies, sizers, lube... I dont plan on stopping EVER.

LOL exactly........I buy a box of ammo for a gun I care about every few weeks, whenever I have a few bucks. If they decide they want them, they will have to do just that

Don't we dig lead out of the ground? Just consider shooting, recycling! I would think the EPA would be thrilled!
We REALLY need to put a stop to this BS!

California has already done it. They also included 22 rimfire ammo for which there is no non lead ammo made.
"The Fish and Game Commission regulations cover both the current and historic range of the California Condor, a broader area than AB 821. All hunting of big game, small game mammals, and game birds in the affected area will require the use of non-lead ammunition. In a surprising decision, the Commission also expanded the non-lead requirement to include .22 caliber rim fire ammunition, for which there are currently no commercially available non-lead bullets. Commissioners voiced hope that ammunition manufacturers would now have a strong incentive to produce and market non-lead .22 caliber bullets. "

It might not happen this time but within two decades, it probably will happen. Sad to say.
