I took the thick chick to the stealership to get the hydrolock damage assessed and repaired.

Being a stealership (without a whole lot of Valk experience  Embarrassed ) they wanted to put a new Honda petcock on. I said NO.

Here's my question: I've seen a "petcock repair kit" on "evil-bay" for about $20. Will this kit repair the known problems with the petcock, or is is a waste of a dead president?

It depends on the problems.  It won't fix a kinked/damaged vent line.

You can buy a petcock repair kit for pretty cheap, or you can by the petcock "coverset" for a bit more.  I think most people get the coverset.  Either should return the OE petcock to original function.... which is not to say it might go FUBAR again. (knock on wood, mine are still kicking)

Can't find a link for the coverset.

The Cover set is $28.91 at HDL.

The petcock on my 98 Tourer was leaking gas into #6 cylinder. I ordered a cover set
kit. While waiting for the part (kit) a link was posted with instructions on converting
the stock petcock to a manual operation. I gave that a try using manual valves my
entire riding life. Works great the kit is still in it's package.
You have to turn the valve   off / on  for safe operation. A faulty carb could cause the dreaded Hydro-lock.

Just get a pingel or similar,  or you will be in the same boat you are know in, in a few years. I read all the time that 'Ive replaced my cover set for the second time' and just do not understand the logic.  uglystupid2 Valkers always what the best for their bikes, tires, oil, etc, but always stick in a oem cover set that has been known to fail.  ???

the first time I ever went to Schroders (a Honda shop in Hendersonville, NC) he took me to the back
to show me a hydrolocked Interstate they had the engine out of... I'm pretty sure they were just
going to fix the hydrolock and give it back to the customer without searching for the cause of
the hydrolock - likely a combination of faulty petcock and one or more of the carbs with a float
that doesn't seat right...

Ask questions of your dealer... at least get a coverset... the new petcock he wanted to put on is the right
idea, same as a cover set, except easier for him (and more $ for you)... if he's doing the work,
a new petcock might be cheaper than a cover set - diminished labor costs...

Thought I was having good luck with mine, but running down the hwy Sunday on the IS thinking this thing should be hitting reserve soon. Finally reached down to check my petcock it was still in the off position. I'm guessing its pingle time. Is there a best pingle petcock ,and supplier ? Or only the manufacturer ? Whats it going to cost me? I could search the archives but since this post is near the top of the page anyone care to help me out?

Yea, its time! I got mine from pingel web site. $90 or so. Been a few years. Cant remember which model but its the non vac type. The pingle is a hair smaller diameter then the oem one so a good hose clamp is required for the fuel line. I put a inline fuel filter and took off with the correct fuel line for the pingel. Bad thing is you reach under a little further for the on/off/resv but you get use to it. Resv pick up is alot quicker then oem.

I keep telling you guys to do the diaphragm test.......60 mph fifth gear and turn the petcock to off.....should run out of gas in about 67 seconds.  Faster than that, the diaphragm wasn't opening the fuel port fully, slower than that and the port is leaking fuel past the diaphragm seal to the carbs........sigh! crazy2
Turn back to on and the carbs ought to recover in about 1-2- seconds.

I have done the test like you say, just been a few weeks. With all these petcocks going bad, has had me worried. With six times the chance of a carb leaking through. Thanks for the help.
