Beautiful east Tennessee ( GOD'S Country )

« on: September 12, 2010, 07:56:39 PM »

I watched one of my best friends and one of the best riders I've ever rode with go down in a left hander on Cherohala Skyline today. Gordon ( Lucky 13 ) is very lucky indeed. He went into the curve and the left saddlebag guard hit the pavement and took the weight off the rear wheel when the tire touched back down it high-sided him over the handle bars and at least 8 to 10 feet in the air end over end like a cartwheel and a half before slamming down on the side of the road. I was right behind him and knew it either busted him up or killed him  Sad  When I got to him the wind had been knocked out of him but he came around pretty quick and was on his feet within 5 minutes. He is complaining  about lower back and shoulder pain . I rode about 100 miles to my house and got my pick-up and trailer while Greg ( Smooth Rider ) and Paul ( Wimp ) stayed with Gordon . He's home now and will see how he feels if the pain gets worse he said he'll go get checked out. Gordon is the second Valkyrie rider I've seen layin' in a ditch  in the last two weeks last weekend Jeff

( Fourtyniner ) went down after hitting a deer on The Natchez Trace ...I did'nt see Jeff crash like I did Gordon today but only one other lady had stooped to help him when we came upon the scene.I stated above that Gordon is one of the best riders I've ever rode with and many members of this club know this as well....If it can happen to him it can happen to anyone. In this picture you can see where he went off the road and where the rider is that stopped to help is where he landed.

Couple pictures of his bike.

Count your blessings my friend and I'm so glad I was able to take this picture  cooldude

Lucky indeed to walk away from a highside.

Must've really had it cranked over to hit those bag rails.

The pictures make it look better than it is the entire dash is ripped out ...Fairing is trash ...Truck is busted ,trunk stay is toast...Left saddlebag and rails wasted...I'm bettin' they total it....It can be repaired and I'm sure it will be totaled or not.

Man hate to hear that. Gordon knows he can ride a bike. Be sure to tell him to get checked at a hospital. Never know what damage on the inside. Hope he heels up quick.

Damn!  I agree with what everyone says...get to a sawbones and get checked out.  When it happens, you are pumped with adrenaline.  Best to get a once over.

Yes, Gordon is one of the best I have ridden with.

Main thing is he seems to be OK - Joe, keep us posted bro.

Hate to see this first thing after turning on the computer. Gordon is someone I have REALLY enjoyed riding with and as stated an extremely experienced and skilled rider. Sorry to here about this and wish you the best. I've been thru this (27 years ago) and as others have said, 2morrow you will not be as spry feeling. Get checked out and some pain meds. Hope you have a quick healing. Dave

Might be time for a handle change, something like NotsoLucky 13.

All kidding aside, I'm really glad your OK Gordon, I hope there are no hidden injuries and healing goes quickly.  Speaking from experience, no matter how good a rider you are, there are only 2 types, those that have been down, and those that are going to go down.  Everyone please be careful, we don't need any more of the later type.

Glad you are mostly okay! Very fortunate in many ways-there are plenty left hand sweepers on the Cherohala that have a rocky cliff instead of a grassy bank to land on. That is one of my favorite rides, but some curves you just hate to think about what could happen...
