Is the Valkyrie engine an "interference" engine?  Meaning; if the timing belt breaks do the valves hit the tops of the pistons or do they miss each other?

Thanks ChrisJ.  I understand about the yes, yes, yes, and yes, yes, yes.  Cheesy

The old girl is 12 years old and has 50,000 on her.  I'm going to change the belts this winter just to be safe.

I changed mine a couple weeks ago. There is a fellow on ebay that sells the correct pair of Gates belts for about $50. That was quite a bit cheaper than I could find at NAPA or HDL, and they fit perfectly.

I replaced mine at 11 years and 30k miles.  They looked good but, after removal there were several cogs that were coming loose from the belt.  Cheap insurance to replace them.

I replaced mine last month. They were 13 years old with 113,000 miles on them. I was amazed at their condition. I'm sure it was time to replace them, but they still looked  surprisingly good.

I did mine at about 100 thousand miles. At this milage the belts still looked good but I decided to change them as cheap insurance. I got my new belts from NAPA for about 26 bucks each. I was told belts were good for the life of the engine, break a belt and the engine is dead.

I think the maintenance chart says change at 60,000 miles.  I need to do mine not because of miles but because my bike is a 98 and I think the age must be a factor even though there are no chemicals involved with the belts operation.  A good winter project.  I have other projects to do too at that time.

Are there NAPA or other non-OEM replacement numbers anywhere? On belts, filters, bearings etc? I read about the side stand bolt issue 2 montha ago, and 2 days later mine broke. I was reading about rear brake pads the other day, and mine are gone. I'm starting to get nervous...
Maybe I should stop reading?
