I recently had my computer completely rebuilt.  New motherboard, Dual core processor,  2 mirrored 500 GB HD's  1-250 GB + 1-80 GB HD's for backup.

When moving music files from one folder to another, they "copy" to the other folder and also remain in the original folder.  Before, they would completely move out and leave the original folder empty.  There must be a setting somewhere, but I don't know where to look.   ???

Any help would be appreciated.   Wink

Agree it sounds like a setting.  Think mine started doing that with WinXP, so probably became the default setting then. What operating system? What version?  Might want to leave it alone. Even though a little more work to do a seperate delete later, chances of making a mistake and losing files are a lot less this way.

Also, you're just asking for trouble with all those HDs.  Just have one main one and get a 1T to plug in USB.  I pd $99 for one, but I've seen them as low as $59 recently.

I have XP Pro.  Same OS as before.  I almost lost everything when my computer went down.  It took the guy who rebuilt it several days before he could get it to start up.  I guess the mirrored HD's plus the backups are so that if a drive should crash, I won't lose everything.

Running 7 on mine. Will take a look at my wife's xp pro when she's off it to see if I can find a setting.

When you just drag and drop with the left mouse button from one window to another, IF the windows are both on the same partition, they will be moved, if they're on different partitions, they'll be copied...

If you select the files you want to move, then drag them with the RIGHT mouse button, a box will pop up asking you which behavior you wish, copy or move... I ALWAYS use the right mouse button when moving things around in Explorer so that the behavior I want to happen is the behavior that happens...

If you go to my documents or another folder it should say menu options on the left side make sure that is open or extended down. Then right click on the file it should open other options in that menu at the left. In that menu it gives you choices what to do with that file one of the choices is to move or copy. This option only happens when you right click the file.

By using the keyboard and mouse, you can control what happens....

Select.mark file then

CTRL + C for copy
CTRL + X for move

select folder

in both cases a CTRL V completes the action in the selected folder.

I open the folder, click on the file and my operating system ask where to.
I have move, copy and several other in my XP Pro.
