There was a discussion about the top vent being a 1 way check. Not a one way. Will vent and also let the fluids out if turned upside down. Was re-doing a rear and removed it. Just a tube with a hole in it with a chrome cap on it to keep water out. David

yep, just pulled one the other day, didn't get time to post, found the same thing. no filtration and prevention of water intrusion is the reason honda recommends a change every 24k miles. http://www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/273/gearbox-contamination

Did the chrome cap break or part of the pumpkin itself? If just the top part I would try and take like a ice pick and drive beside the part that was left in there. Should be able to bend it and remove it. The tube has a ridge in it to make it seat into the pumpkin. David

It's just pressed in. Get a new one, see if you can get the stem of the old one out. lightly coat the edge with sealant of your choice, and stick in.
It's not a one-way...it's sort of a baffle/drainback, but reasonably free flowing. Yes, dust and water can intrude, but not all that easily.

My chrome cap "broke off." (Don't ask) I used Gorilla Glue. Clean both the vent top and the inside of the cap as best you can. Per the instructions, I moistened the top of the vent with water, put a dab of glue inside the cap, and rubber banded it on for my "clamping." Figure out and practice with the rubber bands before you glue it, so that when you apply the glue, you are ready. The trick, as I remember, was to get the rubber bands to hold it on flat. They kept slipping, so that the cap would be canted w/o nearly as much surface area touching the vent top. I used those heavy, fresh produce rubber bands. (You DO eat vegetables, right?) My cap has been on for 4 months and 6000 miles. Will it last forever? I don't know, but I'm pleased so far.

I would use permatex ultra grey or their ultra black. it will stick to metal and is not affected by oils. http://www.permatex.com/products/automotive/automotive_gasketing/gasket_makers/auto_Permatex_Ultra_Grey_Rigid_High-Torque_RTV_Silicone_Gasket_Maker.htm
