So, once again I’m watching “good morning America” and they’ve got obama having to explain the economy and a guy in the audience asks “is the American dream dead for me?”.
Ask yourself, what is the American dream? We’re all different, for my parents (immigrants) the American dream was to make a ton of money and to have a big house, and never ever be hungry again. For them it meant working over 80 hours a week, rarely going on vacation, devoting every minute to saving every penny they could. They lived their dream. Funny thing, all that money they made is now going to a nursing home for my mother!!
For me, the American dream is to work as little as possible, make as much as possible and to not be a slave to the almighty dollar. I don’t want to own my own business (did that already, never again). I don’t want to be a “boss” or “supervisor”. Don’t want to have a ton of friends, one’s enough. Don’t need to have more then one wife, the one I have now is perfect for me. Don’t need acceptance from anyone either. The biggest dream for me is to be independent. Not dependant on any government hand out. Not needing anyone really.
My ultimate dream would be to “invent” something, sell it, then live off of the royalties, and not have to do anything again!!

Alright, let me explain something. my riding buddy got a damn job so he’s not available to ride, it’s raining outside, I’ve got the day off, my cycle’s sitting in the garage with my new CB antenna hanging off the side ‘cause the bracket I made still has wet paint, so I have nothing to do but write up stupid comments on the VRCC and watch GMA. (Oh, just saw a story about Apple computer and Steve Jobs comments to a college girl having problems with her system…. I won’t get started with that one!!)

My dream is to make sure my family is taken care of and that my kids have more than I did. I would say that I am living it. It would be awesome to invent something though as you said and live off the royalties. I could ride whenever I wanted to then ... ahhhh. Sounds like you need more than one friend. Too bad Wisconsin is such a commute from Vermont or I'd take you up on that ride. Although ... it's not raining here ... it's about 35 stinkin' degrees though. A bit chilly on the ride in this morning but later on will make up for it. If you're up for it, it's supposed to be nice here this afternoon. If you 'hoss' it a bit you could be here by dark and then it should be nicer out for our ride.  Hope the rest of your day gets better! I'll be using garage time soon to put the 'ol girl to bed for the winter. Probably gotta get some stabil and some new oil soon cuz if this morning was any indication, my riding days are getting numbered. Stay safe! All the best ...

For far too long and for too many people, the American Dream was buying things they didn't need with money they didn't have to impress people they didn't like / and as bad as the economy seems for now, maybe folks have gotten a handle on what's really important instead of how they look to other people

you've both hit the nail on the head!! i didn't mention in my first rant, that spending as much time with my family IS my american dream. my oldest daughter is going to be 17 this november, i told her when she was 10 that the saddest day of my life will be when she moves away. it's going to be time to invest in kleenex pretty soon!! yesturday i didn't see her at all, today i only saw her for 5 minutes before she ran out the door to go to school. maybe, in a couple of years she'll be bringing over our grand child for us to babysit, hopefully that'll be after she graduates from college!! that's something that money can never buy.

In the past few months I have heard the President, the Speaker of the house and a few Democrat Senators and Congressman talk aobut individual Americans having too much money.
That to me tolls the death knell of the American dream.

I'm living my American Dream......well, almost.....kinda....I have a nice house, the best motorcycle ever made, a mower, tools, tv's, pc's, guns, and other things that I want even though I wouldn't call them needed in every case.....I can go for a ride on the weekend from time to time....go out and eat(too often at times), keep some boots and shoes on my feet....take a few days off with the Wife from time to time....I'll probably never be rich, but I am comfortable..... I grew up poor......my Family didn't have much money, but they worked hard for what they had..my Dad instilled a good work ethic in me.....never had anything much given to me that I didn't get on my own.....there was no "extra" $$ for me to go to college......out of a younger Brother and two older Sisters, I was the first one to graduate from HS....they all ended up getting a GED at some point, but I knew that if I ever wanted to have anything nice in life, I damn well had better work for it....my first car(1973 Dodge Dart Swinger 318-V8) cost me $550.....I had borrowed $500 from a finance company, and I paid my Dad back the other $50.....I bought my own insurance, gas, and maintenance items......My Daddy fussed me out when I paid $550 for a bicycle that I bought a couple of years later when I came to the Univ. of GA.....  ......I had to park beside of $30,000 Beemers driven by kids that had most everything given to them.....many of them flunked out of school, but since I paid my own way, I wasn't going to F it up.....I think it made me appreciate it that much more in the end.....

I watched this on TV this morning and it was the highlight of my day, maybe of my week. She said in an interview that Obama didn't answer her question either. I hope more people are able to confront him while he's out stumping for other dems trying to keep their jobs.

If you listened to what he was whining about it was that he went to school with the idea of getting a govt. service job. Now, he cant find work in his chosen proffession and is bemoaning that he has to pay back his student loans and cant afford to get married. Seems to me that the only thing he is willing to do is dream. .................... The American dream is a simple concept. It isnt owning a big house, having 3 ex-wives, or inventing something and living off the residuals. It is the freedom to take a shot at owning a big house, having 3 ex-wives, or inventing something and living off the residuals. The freedom to succeed, depending on your effort, planning, ability and desire. The nasty thing about freedom is that having the ability to succeed on your own, means you are on your own when you fail. ................. The 2 clips of the dissolussioned Obama voters are case in point. They both expect something over and above what they work for. The lady is a GOVERNMENT employee, and she is complaing that since she voted for Obama, who told everyone what he was going to do, that the policies that she voted for are affecting her. Its all fun and games with other peoples money, until you realize that you are other people. 2 kids in private school and being a chief finacial officer is probably a bit high on the middle class scale and she isnt getting a free ride for anything. The guy who just got out of school wants a job and his shcool paid off, and seems to have no motovation to do anything but look for a handout.

My point is that these well educated people bought into what Obama was selling along with a whole BUNCH of other people and government jobs or not, some of them may be about to wake up from the stupor they have been in since the messiah was put in office. My greatest concern is, will there be a viable and responsible enough candidate to run against him when election time comes around again?

Dead smack on! Varmint, right on too! I have heard many times immigrants {the legal, hard working ones... the kind we want} marvel at the fact that Americans are NOT judged by where they came from or their family history but by their abilities & willingness to be productive. Ladies & gentlemen that is freedom talking. The reasons why a lot of us on this board {conservatives} rail against what the present bunch in control are doing is because we can see how the policies the left is promoting will kill this spirit. The saddest part of all is how so many can NOT see what's happening. Freedom means the RIGHT to make stupid choices in life as well as smart ones. When the government takes over that control we ALL lose. And that's where the left is taking us, one step at a time.

Pursuit of happiness. Operative word is Persue. Might not catch, but you can chase. I chase. I like the persuit. That makes me happy. I can succeed or fail, I'm FREE to do so. I have many times. Mostly in equal proportion. I'm comfy and have things that enrich my family's life. Far more than I deserve perhaps but I've come by it honestly. obama gonna pay mah rint an buy mah gas.
