Over the last several thousand miles, there has been a considerable increase in the noise coming from the alt/tranny cover .  Removed both to inspect for cracks and poor fitment....etc, and really didn't see anything.  So I am thinking the noise is a symptom of something else and they simply serve as a echo chamber and  amplify the underlying cause.  So, has anyone found a solution aside from undercoating the covers which just addresses the echo chamber aspect and not the cause.  If I recall, there is a 'rubber'  damper on the end of the alternator, can that the actual cause.....any thoughts.  Removing the chrome is not a desirable solution....gotta have bling!!

Over the last several thousand miles, there has been a considerable increase in the noise coming from the alt/tranny cover

The bigger question would be " WHY THE INCREASE". That aside, I installed trany covers on my Tourer and the noise increase almost drove me to the point of removing said covers. I did undercoat, no help, then I put Dynamat over the coating. It helped to the point I can stand the gear noise at lower RPM`s. I don`t understand why you would have a "increase" in noise since you did not just install anything.  Undecided  I would look at Alt. for the noise. Good luck.

Or are you close to or past due on your next scheduled oil change?

There have been dozens of folks complain about tranny noise over the past few years and for 100K miles I never had any.....and didn't understand what they were talking about.....I didn't have it.  Now in the last 12-15K miles (3 oil changes) the dam things are driving me batty.  They are not loose, I put sound deadening material on the back side, only the alternator side is noisy.  It does not sound like a noise that would be sympathetic to bad alternator bearings nor do I hear any roar/growl/squeal that would suggest bearings. If you put your hand on the trans and alt cover and apply significant pressure, it quietens the sound down..all this does is simply removes the ability of the covers to vibrate/flex and generate the noise.....but the underlying cause is still there!  Has any one ever eliminated the noise by replacing the alt or alt dampener or anything else.

I had a noise and lived with it until my plastic cover started to peel. I think I was just use to it and did not hear it anymore. I replaced the plastic cover with a custom metal one and the noise is no longer there. The cover was made by a person on this board, however he no longer makes them.

If you take the covers off, does the noise go away?  Have you tried putting a rubber washer between the mounting bolt and cover?  You can get rubber washers from the plumbing department at home depot, by the faucets.  Let us know what you find out, I’ve got kuryacan tranny covers and I haven’t ever noticed any noise.  Check to see if they’re installed correctly.
