I have a 1999 starndard Valkyrie. About half the time or less that i shift from 1st to 2nd, it sounds and feels like it goes into 2nd, but then the nutural light comes on, and I am out of 2nd. All of the other gears are fine. Any way to fine tune the 1st to 2nd shift? I don't have this problem on my 2008 Goldwing, or any other bike I have had in the past. Thanks for any info.

Since it has to go past neutral, the second gear shift needs a little more pressure applied than the other gears. In other words, shift it like you meen it. Hoser

Hoser That and I find a little upward pre-pressure on the shifter helps alot. In other words before pulling in the clutch and choping the throttle give the shifter a little ipward pressure.

Another thing.....I find on the Valkyrie this is more important than on other bikes I have owned. When you get ready to shift, if you let off on all of the throttle it makes shifting harder. If you just eek back an immesurable amount on the throttle as you shift, you will see how smooth the phat lady can shift and put way less stress of the rear end and even the clutch

I have found that sometimes before I apply the clutch, that it up shifts before I'm fully ready for it, like you wrote.

Had same problem when I bought my Valk. Previous owner never had the problem but even riding with different shoes or boots make a big difference so I had to adjust shifter to fit me. Luckily I have an aftermarket shifter with an adjustment rod that is easy to adjust but as stated before you can adjust stock shifter by moving splined shift lever on the shaft.

Just buy a Kickshifter from Rattlebars and for get it.
I always missed 2nd gear prior, now I don't think I've missed it more thna 2 times.
Also, if you are a lazy shifter, it will happen more often.
The Phat Lady needs to be shifted harshly.

Its real imbarrasing when you do it in town and get on the throttle only to find its in neutral.

Its real imbarrasing when you do it in town and get on the throttle only to find its in neutral. Thats when you find out that you subconsciously lean forward when you accelerate. You don't notice it when you actually do accelerate. But when you think you're going to and don't, it just adds to the embarrassment. -RP

I took the advice and moved my shifter 2 teeth, and have not missed 2nd gear since. Thanks for the great help. No more embarrasing moments of trying to impress people by getting on it, and hitting nutural. I can't hear them when I do this, but can feel the snickers of onlookers.

Not to change the subject or hijack the thread - when I shift from 1st to 2nd my 1999 I/S wants to grind its way into gear. It really sounds like it's grinding and you can audibly hear it and feel it in the shifter. It's only 1st to 2nd and the previous (original owner) stated that he also had the problem had it checked by Honda and they declared it to be normal. I am familiar with the "thunk" shift you find in many Goldwings and Valks but this is like nothing I have experienced before. It does not do it 100% (but it's probably 80%) of the time and it has caused me to shift from 1st to 2nd gingerly early in the rpm band. Anyone else had this experience?

My 98 Tourer got a new shifter seal this spring. Must have not put the shifter back on the same position it wanted to grind into second gear. I moved it a spline or two and it became smoother. During the "What did I mess up" phase I found if I would pull in the clutch lever and wait just a second before moving the shifter it shifted better than ever. But that isn't natural so I moved the shifter.

7 days of riding now, since I moved the shifter 2 teeth. Haven't missed 2nd gear yet! I am stoked!! Thanks again, all, for the advice. Missing 2nd gear was really beginning to tick me off. Life is good.

Did you need to move the shifter up or down to resolve the issue? Thanks for your input I appreciate it.
