I've got an old Westernfield M550CR 20 ga pump. Thinking about cutting it off to 18.5"

Sure not probem.

Just be careful with the measurement, it better be 18+ or the ATF will get excited about the tax/registration. And the gun must be 26 inches overall.

I use a hacksaw then a mill bastard file to true it up using a carpenters square. Then a flat block with 200 or 300 grit sand paper. After that I use a drill without a bit, using the tapered steel chuck to gently ease/polish the inside edge. A little cold blue if you want it blued or leave it shiny.

Have fun, I to like the shorter barrels, and open choke.

The shells on this one almost hang out the end of the barrel...It throws a flame about 3 feet.First time I shot it it almost ripped my thumb off  Shocked   Once you get the feel of the kick it's a BLAST to shoot .My friend who passed away not long ago loaded me a couple boxs of custom load (Double  00 ). I work on the road and always have this in the motel room with me anyone that comes through my door with force will have a very bad day.

Joe's is a local TN product made in Ducktown TN, I think. Several different configurations available.

JefK,
I think what you are proposing is one of the best home defense weapons you can have when it is loaded with 00buck. When I worked midnights on the police department and had to check out a warehouse or large building, I always grabbed the shotgun out of the squad with 00buck even though I had could have picked an AR15.

Shooting that is like shooting a handful of rounds at them all at once, and from 25 feet away you don't even have to aim, you just point and shoot because your pattern is going to be about 2 foot around.

I do recommend that you practice with it to get used to the kick.

I know they were having some $$ issues and were hard to contact, but as of December 2009 they were still shipping some firearms. Have not had or  needed to contact since then.

Saw it off.  It is easy to do.  I've sawed off more than one over the years.  Put a butt-pad on it too.  Sawed-offs tend to kick.
