Why would someone pay $239 for a used u-joint on ebay from Pinwall when they can get a brand new one from Directline for $96?  What am I missing here?

It's very difficult to determine if a used u-joint is going to give you much service.

The range of motion of the u-joint is so restricted that trying to feel any peculiarities with the bearings is next to impossible unless the u-joint is really wasted to begin with.

A used u-joint might be good for a spare if you desire: But to remove a working u-joint because of mileage and replace it with a used one without knowing the history is foolhardy.

Just have to tough it out till next year!

Agreed.  If you have a failed u-joint, I would go ahead and use a used one.  Probably last a long time.  However, I would not replace a working u-joint with a used one.  If you are worried, buy a used one for a spare, until you get a new one.

I guess I went against the conventional wisdom.
I replaced my 102,000 mile U-joint with a used 25,000 mile trike take off u-joint just because I was there servicing the rear tire, rotor & lubing the driveshaft. Upside is I now have a known good spare for any of our Valks, albeit a 100K mile known good u-joint but it's still tight. I just figured I'd play the odds.  Cool

Did the same thing replaced one with 100K on it with a brand new one.  I kept the old one for a spare. It didn't show any wear or play in it.

my 99 I/S is gdo work on it is getting close to 100K miles and I wanted to be ready for teh dreaded ujoint failure.

When I found out they are now on backorder I took a suggestion from here and contacted a Trike shop to see if they had one from a conversion that I woudl as a just in case.

They did - for 50.00 - I wnet down to Trikes by Coach Rice in Loganville, Ga and picked it up - walked out 300.00 out of pocket - turned out they also had the swing arm, axle, final drive, wheel , tire, brake caliper, rear shocks - so it has been added to my just in case pile Smiley

Anyone in the Atlanta area wanting take off parts they are good place to go to. Also they have some very nice trikes and even a few 2 wheel valks for sale. (I wasn't allowed to look at them too closely - wife was wanting to get back home and go for a short ride on her new 07 Shadow)

I don't think there are any Trike shops in BC, so I'm stuck on ebay and shipping.
