Passed a deer standing beside the road on the BRP yesterday. Went 100 yds or so and passed a Wing going the other direction. Didn't know how to let them know there was a deer that close, so I just yelled "Deer" as they went by. Is there some kind of signal that is widely recognized? Like tapping your helmet for a LEO?

We usually move hand up and down kinda like patting the road. Kinda like a slow down. We use it for cops ahead to. Never done the head thing. Yelling might sound something different to him. 'Deer' could come across as something else.

Yeah, that dawned on me AFTER I had yelled! But maybe he slowed down to ask his passenger what that idiot was yelling about?!

You can try this one. It means road hazard with antlers. Instead of proceeding to the road hazard ahead, they then will turn around and follow you. And when they catch up to you they will then bestow upon you their gratitude.

The signal I have seen used some is your arm straight forward, palm up and push it out and back, kind of like the slow down used by others.

Those are good, but I think an intelligent rider will take note of any kind of signal, (besides the biker wave,) as an indicator for "Heads-up!"

I'd have to go for the "patting the road" action. Anything saying slow down should (?) highten awareness. BB, That might be a signal for "lonely ugly person making offers". Thats how I do it anyways.

Re: What's the hand signal?!!? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'd have to go for the "patting the road" action. You can also hit your starter and that will flash your lights.

Another possible signal (if you're going slow enough) is to point your left index & middle fingers at your own eyes, then turn your head and shoulders and and point directly to where the deer was/is.
However, the surest way to warn oncoming traffic of something bad up ahead their way is to repeatedly flash your lights at them (brights, spots, etc); they won't know what it is, but should be looking.

I tap the top of my helmet...or the patented slow down by pushing my hand towards the ground warning for some thing in the road...

How about left hand, palm forward, fingers pointing up and spread with your thumb touching helmet, imitating deer antler. I think that would make an easily read signal that isn't vague like slow down.

Around here, deer country. We use an open hand , palm forward and fingers spread like antlers. Thumb on helmet, rest of fingers pointed up.
