Hey all,

Okay, so I got in a jazillion o-rings for a complete overhaul of the carb seals (had a fuel rail leak between 4 and 6).  I'm separating the carbs and noticed that all of them have something that looks like this (see picture) in the fuel rail path.  It looks like a filter...but every one of them is laying sideways or twisted or such.  I'm assuming they're not supposed to be like that.  If not, where are they supposed to be...and with an inline filter (with the belly tank installation also comes an inline filter right before the fuel splits into the rails) do I even need them anymore?

As a side, the belly tank puts a fuel pump in a previously unpressurized system.  I thought this may have contributed to this.

Also, carbs 4 and 6 will NOT separate from each other.  It looks like there was a lot of corrosion in the...joint pipe? and this is probably sticking it.

Thoughts on either / both?

Thanks,
David

David

The pressurised system may have contributed but petrol just poured out of mine with a conventional system. The rubber O rings just went hard. I suspect lack of use was to blame with mine as the bike hadn't been used for 2 years when I bought it.

Mine were a pig to separate but I just tugged at them and then pushed them together a load of times and eventually they separated. It wasn't easy though. But they came apart eventually.

Not sure about the photo as I don't know what I am supposed to be looking at. Can you add another photo or modify this one with an arrow or something to indicate your area of concern?

Hi Colin,

Here's another picture.  Same issue, just a different carb.  Close-up time!  Smiley

they're the bowl filter screens and that is how they look, there is nothing wrong, all of the carbs have them. final filter for the float needle and seats, leave them be.

all carbs come apart, slight corrosion, wd40 or similar should be enough.

Excellent, thanks!  Moving along then.  4 down 2 to go...if they'll come apart.  They would be the one's that had the leak between them too...

use some silicon grease or now commonly known as dielectric grease on the o-rings. will ease installation, help extend o-rings life and help prevent future corrosion.  cooldude

most carbs have a screen right before the needle valve for the float.  have 'em on my yamaha also.  but to me this looks like a whale shark!!  never seen one of those in a carb!!
