2001 Standard  The bike acts, sounds and feels just as it does when it is first needing to be put on reserve in any gear when it is lightly loaded and under 2500 RPMs. Begins  to clear itself after that and all traces are gone by 3000RPMs. Friends riding behind can hear it burbling.  Replaced plugs but no change. I know the exact time it started. Was toying with my freind on his harley and had her twisted up a bit but no rev limiter hit.  Had an independent shop look at it but only got alot of stuff done that didn't change it at all except lighten my wallet. It only had 7900 miles on it when it started this summer. Any ideas appreciated

Probably have clogged low speed jets. Try a full can of Seafoam at your next fill-up.

Do the simple stuff first

Have tried for a couple of months all sorts of cleaners including seafoam,  also tried using a suspension plastic air line and sprayed carb cleaner into the float bowls to soak,  through the drain plugs, no change. What rpm does the bike get off the low speed circuit?

does it have an inline fuel filter?

and check the vacuum on the petcock for leak down.

and tighten ALL the clamps from the air box to the carbs.

There is not a direct connection between rpm's and throttle position.  (Idle, mid, wot) Indexing the throttle will give you the information you seek.

You troubling issues is most likely related to quality of the gasoline you are using and synchronization of the carburetors.

Try a different source for fuel and drain a little bit from the float bowls to get rid of any sediment and/or water that may be present.

I've experienced the same problems as you and found a gasoline that has reduced mine by at least 3/4's.

Draining the float bowls has also helped.

I still put an additive in the gas occasionally, but usually to no avail regarding the same. Habit I guess!

+1....agreed

The chemical solution is no substitute for a thorough cleaning in my experience.  Been down this road myself and have helped 3 other buddies remove/clean their carbs and all of us have been thrilled with the results.

If you plan to keep this bike for a while, then I recommend just doing it right by cleaning the carbs and installing new slow jets.  It's also a good opportunity to replace or remove vacuum lines, install new fuel lines, and replace pilot & intake orings.  If you do it this way you should be good for another 10 years with proper fuel storage habits during long periods of layup.

Good luck....feel free to pm if you have any questions.

My experiences are very much like to  JR's.

I always end up removing the carbs and cleaning them for best results.
I have been able to carefully clean the pilots and reuse without any issues.

Pilot jet is primary below 2500 and transitions over to main by 3000.
Assuming that you are stock intake and exhaust.
