I have read many things on here about using this converter and even baught one following a link to evilbay from another post. Here is my problem; The bike (99 I/S) has the five wire setup and so does my trailer. The converter has five wires on the input side ("power"-Lturn-Rturn-brake-tail-ground), and only 4 wires on the output side (Lturn-Rturn-tail-ground). How do I wire in the converter and only use 4 wires to the trailer? Do the brake lights run off of the turnsignal wires? If I'm thinking right, I will have to run the turnsignals with the brake lights instead of seperately like they are now. Clear as mudd, right?
Thanks for any help that anyone can give,
Paul

That converter is intended for a U Haul style trailer light setup. It has 4 outputs because the brake and turn functions are integrated. I have this converter on both of my bikes but I rewired my trailer for a U Haul flat 4 plug. This way I can pull my trailer with either bike or my truck. If your trailer needs 5 wires, I'd suggest you run the brake wire around the converter direct from the bike to the trailer. Then don't run the brake wire into the converter. The separate brake wire can then be integrated into the harness to the trailer for 4 separate functions (plus ground).

Something like whay you're trying to do was recently discussed on a different thread. It had to do with the wiring requirements and techniques for a new LED spoiler that was being installed.

On that thread I described what I did on my thick chick and how to use existing wiring (and some creative splicing) to connect the 5 wire flat style trailer connector in such a way as to allow appropriate and accurate trailer wiring.

If you can't find that thread, either post or PM me and I'll provide you with the details. There's really no need for you to use the converter, especially if your trailer has the 5 wire connector. You can take each of the Valk's light wires (two turn signals, tail and brake plus a ground), splice a connector to each in an appropriate place and run the new wires to the flat connector.

Let me know if you need more info.

The reason I was going to run the cnverter is that when I'm riding with the trailer atached, at a light with the brakes on, I can see the lights dim when the fan comes on. I'm concerned that the trailer is putting too much pull on the electrical system. I thought about running red lenses in the turnsignals and wiring them to the brake/turnsignal as in the 4 wire set up.

I ran into the same problem. I read the board and bought the converter then realized… “This will not work”. What I did was to use the converter for the turn and break and used a separate relay for the running lights. I already had a fused relay block installed so it was easy. Do they make a 5 to 5 setup?

I have talked to Hoppy, and they said that they did not make a setup for a 5 to5 wiring setup. They also said that this setup was highly unusal. I guess I'm not supposed to have this kind of wiring on my trailer. Thanks for the tips, I think I'm going to use the converter for the brake and turns and bypass the tails.
Thanks,
Paul

Your solution may be  for an electrical connections trailer relay isolation with universal harness.
http://www.electricalconnection.com/wire-harnesses/hrns-trailer.htm

This will cure your power draw issue as it uses relays to light the trailer bulbs, isolating your motorycle electronics.

I have one on my car and motorcycle.  If you need to go to a 4 plug trailer, they also sell an adapter that clicks in place.

Is this more what your looking for?  If so let me know if you need wiring help.
