The State of confusion.

WWW
« on: October 25, 2010, 10:56:54 AM »

I have to start out by saying, "I'm all right." Don't you hate when you have to start a conversation that way?

Popped a wheelie on the Valk this morning...from a standing stop...without even using the engine.

I stopped at the stoplight at Record and Young street (downtown Dallas)...across the street is the entrance to work. There was an SUV in front of me. Fortunately I'm in the habit of not pulling up real close to the cars in front of me at the light.

KerBangCrunchTinkle! The lady in the little car thing behind me was slowing down the last time I checked my mirrors (always when coming to a stop), but at the last second she looked down for her work ID and just didn't slow down any more.

Popped the front wheel a bit off the ground and pushed me forward a bike and a half length or so. Almost dropped it, but fortunately the hit was pretty much straight on (the bike turned a little to the left) so there wasn't much sideways vector to stop...she was leaning over to the right hard and I was just at the point where I was at the edge of my strength and it was time to let her go and ease her down, but at that last second...I got it. Gonna be sore a bit methinks...as much from the hit as the holding her up.

In the pics below I've already pulled the fender away from the wheel as hard as I could without fetching tools so I could get her off the street...

The hit was above the pipes, so they are apparently not damaged on first inspection. Looks pretty much like the damage is confined to the rear fender segment and lights. I'll have to check MUCH closer...the tire took most of the hit...but I don't think it was hard enough to damage the swing arm.

I know that big, bouncy goodyear on the back is supposed to result in flaming death, but I think it took the brunt of it and saved me some damage today.

My backrest caught a load...I'll have to see if I've performed the "Serk cut" or not.

Already called in a claim. Hopefully hear from (her) adjuster soon. Shouldn't be any big deal except fender segments are pricey new.

Didn't really need something else to work on though.

Not the *best* way to start the day...but I'm still walking and talking!

Glad to hear you're okay! While reading it, I was already composing a reply blaming the CT for the wreck, but then you beat me to it... Wink

On the bright side, you were wanting to do a custom fender, right? Now you've got a crumpled up one you can experiment on to your heart's content and not worry if you screw it up!

I've been hit in the rear twice on the Valk. Approx $1500 damage each time.  I thought maybe it was due to the rear light not being bright enough(both daytime hits) but,........ it might have been due to the car tire on the rear.  Wink

Oh yeah... And have you taken some preemptive Tylenol or Ibuprofen? IMHO, get some of your favored pain killer into your system NOW to head off the aches before they get going...

(I'd personally use Ibuprofen for it's anti-inflammatory properties, but whatever your preferred one is, take some now!)

FIrst off, glad you are safe. Sheet metal can be straightened or replaced.  Smiley

I do think it is due to the car tire though!!! Not anything to do with vision. The car tire of the back of your bike is secretly communicating with the tires on the cage BEHIND you!!!!

In some sort of ritualistic mating attempt, the tires on the Cage are attempting to "EXCORCISE" the demonic Motorcylcle spirits out of the CT on you Fat Lady. I am sure that is it! If that fender would not have gotten betweeen them it may have joined the relatives on the cage that hit you.

Be careful to retrain your CT to the ways of the "Spirit of the Valkyries" after fixing the bike and before going on any long trips.  2funny crazy2 cooldude

That is not a good way to start the work day.  Glad you're all right, as others have said the tins are replaceable.

On the plus side you have a great excuse to go for a long ride to "colour" (cough).. dirt.. (cough) match the rest of the bike when you get a new fender. Cheesy

Ride safe.

I'm fine. Just sore. Looks like the bike just needs a fender segment and some lights/brackets. I probably have the stuff in my garage, but I suppose I need to let her adjuster see it first.

I hope she got a ticket???  ... failure to stop within assured clear distance ahead.

Not in Dallas. The cops don't come out for "non-carnage" related accidents.

Glad to hear you're alright and doing well. Had a young lady back over me last Tuesday, 10-19, I did a wheelie backwards. Slammed the bike in the front and bent the right fork, knocked both of us down. She said the usual, "I didn't see you".

You'll probably have to replace that rear fender section with new.  The front rear fender sections are a plenty, but the rear sections are as rare as hen's teeth on ebay.  Maybe you know of another source.
