Dunkirk MD

« on: October 29, 2010, 05:13:31 PM »

First of all I would like to thank all of you for the tips on this web site. I just got my Valk in Aug as some of you know. I rode it from El Paso Tex to Dunkirk MD. The speed limit in Tex was 80 mph posted. I got use to that speed. Do all of you find it hard like myself to rein in this Dragon when it wants to run?
I know it sounds like a goofy topic but I was wondering if you folks have the same problem or if I just have a heavy foot. I bought the Valk because our Harley Mech at work rides one. If the Harley Mech is riding a Valk that should tell you something.  police

I own ( 3 ) Valkyrie's and it seems every one of them has a sweet spot at 85 mph.

Ya gotta learn how to train your Dragon. If it wants to run away, you're lettin' the beast have it's way with you.

Mine has a knack for always wanting to go just fast enough to pass any other MC's that are in front of her.

The wife blames me, but I keep telling her that anytime my VALK can "sniff" the exhaust of another bike she just HAS to pass it.

I'll bet that many other VALKS also have this problem.  Evil

There are lots of us (lots) that have found the dragon loves to run. Don't know what the search would be to find this answer. Just this summer, I rode to visit my mother and both the dragon and rider felt very comfortable at 80+.  Even at !)) (yeah look at the keyboard) the dragon was breathing easy. If you like the feeling, the Valk is very smooth at the higher speeds. Inspires confidence in the bike when it is smooth at higher speeds.

My mechanic speculates that the beefed up crankshaft adds some stability to the already stable F6 engine. You know that we have 1000 rpm higher redline than our Goldwing cousins??

They do like to run!  I don't get ride down in South Texas much, but I sure like the 80 mph posted speed limit on the interstate down there!!!!  Its hard to keep her under control most of the time, even at the 70mph posted around here!!

You will find as we get older the most of us have gotten bigger.
I was told by one of our fellow riders, that is a bit larger than myself
at 165 that my bike must not know I am along for the ride.
I find that 70MPH is where I ride a feel good. That maybe from
going down years ago or just liveing in an area of alot of traffic.

What you'd like to do, and what you can consistently get away with are two different things, depending on your geography.  Here in the East, 70 is the highest speed limit you can find, and this is rare; more often 55, or 65 outside of populated areas.  Getting caught at 80 in VA (automatic reckless driving, and same points as DUI) will cost you a bundle for the ticket and for your insurance for the next 3-4 years, and you may get to see the jail with bike impound.  I do 80, and then some, from time to time, but those kind of punitive laws have a decided chilling effect on chronic speeding.  I am much more apt to go 55-70 on back road twistys posted at 40-5.  Less chance of seeing LE out there, and it's really more exciting than 80+ on easy superslab riding.

i hadn't gotten a speeding ticket for 25 years, then i got the Valk!!  there's something about that damn thing!  everytime i ride it i want to go fast, probably because it's so smooth you don't realize you're doing 80!!

i've since bought a radar detector, it's already paid for its self!!

My wife always says if you just maintain your speed, sooner or later, the speed limit will come up to meet you.

When conditions allow, I prefer a brisk pace. One thing I try to keep in mind, is how quickly can I slow down to avoid... whatever. A while back, I was running/accelerating around 75 with my feet on the highway pegs, when a lady pulled right out in front of me. I could see her surprised/startled face as I grabbed too much front brake. I could hear the front tire sliding on the asphalt and feel the front of the big Valk starting to move sideways as I eased off of the handle. She (Valk) straightened up, and I got rid of a lot of speed fast. Fast enough to come nowhere close to plowing into the side of the frightened lady's little car.

Y'all have fun, but be careful out there...

My buddy recently bought a new to him Valk. He's having a few title issues (which he'll resolve) so he's not ridden it yet. He's cranked it once or twice since he bought it. I was standing in the garage admiring it the other night, and he said to me, "it just sounds like it wants to run."

I smiled. It does.

Yea, my throttle rest is set at 65 mph so this is my ave speed. Gotta watch it in town tho. Nothing worse then turning off the interstate onto a 2 lane road and have to slow down to 55 since you just came off of 2500 mile trip of 75+ mph. Esp that last few miles home. Really hard to do.

It seems I am always suprised when I get home and check my distance for the day on the GPS. The screen also has max speed for the day and it suprises me when it has three digits and all I did was pass a car or three.
