To desmog my Valk?  Is it worth the trouble and do the carbs need to be readjusted or rejetted?  After talking with Smokinjoe, Big Al and others I have decided to do the double bearing upgrade to the rear wheel when I pull it as well.  Thanks for everyone's help!

Desmogging isn't hard to do.  There are instructions on the tech page I believe.  No rejetting is required after a desmog.

Thanks Skinhead.  I'm thinking about adding this to my "to do" list.  I saw a kit somewhere that had everything needed to do the desmog.  Is it worth the money?

I don't know what the kit costs, all you need is some JB weld, and 4 9/16" freeze plugs (available @ NAPA).

Thanks again for the help.  I will get the parts for the bearing mod and do it when I service the splines and chunk.  You guys are the greatest!

While you're at it with the JB Weld, get the JB Quick version. It sets up in minutes so you don't have to wait hours for it to cure. When I've done the desmog for others, I cut the chrome tubing at a point where it's rather horizontal. Then stuff a little pinch of paper towel or cotton ball in the tube about 1/4" to keep the JB Quick from running down the tube. Put a bit of JB in and work on something else for 15 min. or so, then go back and add a final layer and smooth it off even with the end of the tube. Never had one come back and they ride it home.

Curious, if there has  been documented improvement or longer life with the double bearing upgrade or is it just speculated?  It would seem that it should be better.... but I wonder if it has been proven?

Just speculation, although I believe well grounded speculation.

It took me 95.000 miles to wear out my first single row rear bearing; twenty thousand for the second.  I'm not sure there are enough samples or enough patience to adequately document a trend.

I run the double row bearing mod on my Istate, but not yet on our two standards.
