This morning alongside I-70 I caught a glimpse of what I at first thought was a deer carcass, but a second glance revealed it was larger than the average whitetail buck and was covered in very dark brown fur.  Our whitetails in these parts are a mix of grey and tan.  There was just a tip of antler visible from the other side of the head and what was showing had a slight hook to it.

I have, twice in the past, run over a deer carcass on the flyway.  I'm pretty sure if one of these monsters were lying in the lane I wouldn't be able to successfully clear it.  I don't even want to think about encountering one upright.

The spot where I saw this anomaly was fully fifty miles west of Missouri.  There is an elk farm in west central Missouri, but that's a hundred miles east.

I just hope what I witnessed was the result of something falling off a truck and not the evidence of a shifting wildlife population.

Ft Riley has a herd of elk that was re introduced in the 70's. They are monitored by the state parks and wildlife dept. and they do free range and some break away possibly starting smaller groups.
There have been enough sightings thru out the state to convince me they are out there but I think there have been more mountain lion sightings than elk. Very few in either case. Elk are detrimental to Motorcycling but a 200lb wild cat would make you want a full face helmet (and a rifle) just to cross the street!

My brother almost hit an elk with his car near Fort Riley a couple years ago.  Meanwhile, check this out...

I heard they were rereleasing herds into western NC and Eastern TN to correct over hunting that had limited the numbers. My father saw a few on his recent trip down the parkway. His riding buddies think they were deer, but Dad was sure they were too big and must be elk in the distance.

Wouldn't want to hit them.
