I know a few of the folks here on the Valk board do a little light reading from time to time. I remember a couple of you being fans of Robert Jordan's American fantasy masterpiece series, The Wheel of Time, which is fantastic world captured in 14 volumes. As fans know Robert Jordan passed away a few years ago leaving notes for the last book. The estate, his wife, and long time editor, hired a younger writer to finish the remained of the large series and bring it to a close. She chose Brandon Sanderson. I recently went to D.C. to meet Sanderson and have a few books signed where I had the chance to say to him, "I wish I'd read you before you became the guy that was chosen to finish the Wheel of Time."
Brandon Sanderson has co-authored the last two Wheel of Time books with the literary estate of Robert Jordan. Additionally, Sanderson is a great author in his own write (pun intended). Besides helping to resolve Jordan's 30 year epic, Sanderson has had a few successes of his own. Those successes are seeing higher sales as a result of the added publicity that the WOT has brought to him.
One of his recent efforts, Warbreaker, is a fun read. It is an interesting stand alone fantasy novel.
An odd characteristic of the book is that it was originally published on Sanderson's website. After the sales increase post WOT, Sanderson and Tor made the book available in hardcover and now in paperback.
Since I've most of the rest of Sanderson's books, and was early to the book signing on Saturday I picked up Warbreaker. I started reading it while passing the time before the book signing. It is a fun read. At first I thought the book was fine but might not be memorable. Now a few events have happened (some predictable and some unpredictable) that have me devouring this book.
I thought I'd share.
By the way, I was nearly late to work this morning because I was sitting here reading this book. I finally put my boots and jacket on and read the book as I walked up the driveway to my Valk. I stuffed the plump paperback in my hip pocket and rode to work. So, yes, it is Valk related. For those of you that are looking for a fantasy book to enjoy while being wintered in in the Frozen north, I'd recommend Warbreaker.
