It has been a long time since I have visited this Valkyrie board. I have a 1999 Tourer and need recommendations for 12,000 Mile Service, I live in Coppell near DFW airport. I don't think that I want to tackle it myself so, looking for any suggestions to good experiences with dealers or independent shops? Any discounts or coupons? It looks like this service is over $500. Do you recommend going with synthetic engine oil?
Thanks in advance, Bill

there is nothing difficult about basic service. I would go to the next wrench party in your area. These folks have more experance than most dealers for a lot less $$. And A lot of fun to visit with other valkers.

Do you recommend going with synthetic engine oil? Yes! I use Mobil 1 15 - 50 in the crank and Mobile 1 75 - 90 in the diff. I would go to the next wrench party in your area. Being that it's 11 years old with only 12K miles, the chances are something has rotted versus worn out. Spline/rear wheel service, changing the oil, checking the valves - anything else really important? Probably a good idea to change out the brake and clutch fluid and if you are on original tires, replace immediately! With the exception of the tires, all can easily be done and you know it's done right. Download the shop manual from Dag's webpage http://www.valkyrienorway.com/ (it's the last item in the Technical listing on the left) to get a good handle on what to do. He also has videos showing a lot of the basic maintenance. Even though Dag lives in Norway, he is an adopted Texan. Synthetic oil is fine but not the ones with the extra mileage additives. I use Shell Rotella Full Synthetic in my I/S and it seems to be pretty popular. Seems to quiet down the transmission, too. The wrench party is the best idea. You just missed one in Kilgore but there is usually one every month here in DFW. Come and be a part of the group - all joined by our love of the Valkyrie. RainMaker

Have to agree with the wrench party idea. The VRCC DFW folks know more about your Valkyrie than almost any dealer. I did the first 12,000mi service myself for my '98 Standard and haven't looked back. (Bought her in '08 with 9,700 miles on the odometer.) I used the information from the VRCC Tech board and information from Dag's site - http://www.valkyrienorway.com/index.html - along with helpful insight from other local VRCC members. I also have a shop manual that helps.

Hey Bill,
I'd start with air filter and oil / filter change. After several oil change intervals of Royal Purple I'm running Mobil 1 15w-50 + Purolator Pure One PL14610. While you're in there, I'd do the petcock cover set in the spirit that it's rotted, or close, and not worn out. After that, do the brake / clutch fluids and rear end maintenance and check the tires for dry rot. If they're original, they're at least hard. If it's got a flat spot or two in the RPMs, I'd run several tanks of Sea Foam, Berryman's, Techron, etc through the fuel system. If you'll do a search for those topics on either the TX or Tech board you'll get tons of info.
Other than those, I'd run the PeePee out of it and get to 24,000 ASAP!
BTW, we can knock all of those out at a wrench party, no problem.

Here Here on the tire if it is the OEM Dunflops. You only got 2 under you, you need them to be good and not dry rotted! Not the place to save a buck! You also might consider changing the coolant too, but that reservoir is a pain to make the hoses up to. Enjoy!

Oooops! I thinks me forgot about the coolant. Obviously, it doesnt do much good sitting on the shelf (hiding behind cleaners and lubricants). Guess I'll put that on my 'NEXT TO DO' list. tom
