This is because everyone considers themselves a "__________-American".  America is put last.  Some folks will side with the first part of their identity before siding with America (Muslims partying in the streets across the river when the towers fell for a disgusting example). 

I don't consider my self anything but an American and I think ALL "_________-Americans" should go back to __________ until they are ready to call themselve just plain Americans.  (Or at the verrrrrry least "American-_________s".

The schools I went to, both public and parocial, had the flag flying on property everyday.  When was it decided that the American flag should not be displayed on government property?  I don't care who may find it offensive.  "the school was concerned about racial tensions or uprisings because of the flag", Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't "uprisings" illegal?   Wouldn't it make more sense to punish the "uprisers" for their illegal actions rather than prohibit lawful activity?  We have got to be more careful of who we place in positions of authority.

With a small amount of Google research, I found there is some history to this article.  It seems that during Cinco de Mayo at that school, some students displayed the Mexican flag.  Apparently it caused a racial disruption with other students, and the students were asked to remove the flag.  When the American flag was displayed, the principle decided to ask the student to remove it, as to not show bias with the rules.  A Supreme Court ruling gives this power to school officials.
 
It’s too bad we have come to this.  I grew up in a diverse neighborhood.  We celebrated each other’s cultural heritage as if it were our own.  Nowadays, there is so much suspicion and finger pointing, that it seems un-American to celebrate anything from our diverse cultural history.

Celebrating your heritage isn’t considered racist, but preventing someone from celebrating their heritage might be considered un-American.

Look folks.  We are the "Land of the Free" and "Home of the Brave".   Any one should be able to display any flag they wish;  the objections to flags of other countries or nationalities seems trivial, unless it infringes on MY right to proudly display the fag of my country America.

I think the irritation many of us feel, is not about flags, it’s about accommodation of immigrants to the point that we are forced to pay for translated State and Federal documents,  free medical care (which is NOT free those of us who actually pay taxes and pay for our own healthcare pay for it in higher premiums and deductibles), welfare, provide alternative classes in public schools in a language other than English, and the attempts to provide citizenship to those without even a rudimentary understanding of the English language;  learning a new language is a part of the difficulty one accepts when one immigrates to a new country. 

I welcome everyone, just get here legally and follow our laws.   I admire people who are bi-lingual and those who speak and write several different languages.  But, If you choose to stay here long term, it is incumbent upon you to learn the language of your new country;  It is not incumbent on me to learn yours.

This is certainly NOT an hispanic thing.  NYC has more Puerto Ricans living here than in Puerto Rico itself.  On the day of the Puerto Rican Day parade, and for weeks before and after, the Puerto Rican flag is flown everywhere there is an empty space.  They wrap the hood of the cars with flags.  Nobody get offended and, really, nobody gives a Chit (except for the guys who got mad when Kramer burned the flag on Seinfeld).

What really bugs me is there  isnt any one at this school who will stand up and say flying a flag doesnt have anything to do with anything accept being patriotic and I wont even consider reacting to it period.

I teach Criminal Justice in a very diverse high school, I am lucky enough to have a mock court room in my classroom. We have like any other court room a large American Flag displayed in it. I also have flags from other countries in and around the room and you are right all of them are displayed below the American flag.

we are talking about international flags.    I have no problem with someone from another country celebrating their heritage but I think it is wrong to fly their countries flag here in the United States especially if they don't fly the American Flag over it.

On one side you can agree with the school.  They probably have a large Hispanic element that feels that their “rights” were violated when they wanted to display the Mexican flag, and since they feel “violated” they’re going to retaliate against anyone proudly displaying the American flag.  So, the school told little Cody to remove his flag ‘cause they had a bunch of Mexican thugs roaming the hallways waiting to make anyone patriotic their victims.  

Do I agree with the school?  ABSOLUTELY NOT!  The school should have had a “no foreign flag” policy to begin with.  They should have NEVER celebrated May 5th as a holiday, in anyway, shape or form.  I would highly doubt that the school even celebrates their own states “day of joining the union” (what ever that day is called) let alone celebrating a Mexican holiday.

It is our government’s responsibility to protect its citizens.  If the school felt that Cody’s property was in danger, then the school should have provided a security guard for that one kid.  It’s not his fault that he was raised to be patriotic.  This is an excellent example of one child being attacked by bullies, and the school NOT providing protection for that one kid.

I am an American.  With Italian heritage.  Those idiots that call themselves “Italian-Americans” can all go to hell or go back to were their parents/grandparents came from!

My mother has lived in America for 60+ years, she was an Italian citizen for only 18 years.  EVEN SHE CALLS HERSELF AN AMERICAN AND NOT AN “Italian-American”

I used to have a mobile burger bar and used to fly the Union Jack and St Georges flags to (a) be more visible (b) to let people know I was open for business and (c) because I'm British,,,,the local council asked me not to fly the flags because it might upset some people.

Truly, Mr. Glue, a bit of flag etiquette has been misstated both in this thread and others.  It is not necessary that other flags fly beneath the U.S. flag, only that no other flag be displayed above Old Glory.
