Between this forum, and my owners manual, I decided to buy some "Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic motor oil"  I was about ready to do the change, but got cold feet.   Undecided   My newer VTX requires "motorcycle oil."  The Mobil 1 isn't marked for motorcycles.  Thought I would double check before I do the change.  Did I get the right stuff?   It's API SM, SL/CF

Depends on the additive content, 10-40 and 15-50 meet these needs, I have used the 15-50 mobil 1 for 77000 miles. It would be fine for you.  Maybe it's just me, but I would not use anything under 10-40, especially in Florida, because of the warm climate.  Many opinions of oil, I'm sure you will hear more.  I am not the type of rider to baby the big girl when I twist the throttle. I do not use motorcycle specific oil, no reason to that I am aware of.  cooldude hoser

If you buy Mobil 1 4T it is motorcycle-specific, fully synthetic oil.  Probably not too much different in price than regular Mobil 1.

I've used Mobil 1, basically for cars, for over 200,000 miles and no problem.......

Any of my bikes that are AIR COOLED, I use 'Mobil - Motorcycle exclusive oil' only, my water cooled ones all get Mobil 1.  Usually 15-50.

Couple of times I went deep South and used 10-40, without any problem.

Mobil 1 Motorcycle specific oils normally run about $9-10/quart.  You can get a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 car or truck oil at Wally World for roughly $24.

So far nobody has mentioned "energy conserving". Look on the back of the container and find the double ring with the service codes. If the lower half of the ring says energy conserving, you can't use that in the bike. The wet clutch might slip. The  EC term means the oil has friction modifiers in it for better fuel mileage but the wet clutch will suffer.

I've been using Mobil 1 15W-50 on my 2 Valks for a combined 200,000+ miles.  It's a supurb oil, and places at or near the top of every oil comparison test I've ever read.  And the Mobil 1 brand is recommended by many manufacturers of exotic, high performance cars.

Having said that, I wonder if it will be harder to find in the future.  This summer I noticed that 2 WalMart stores in Western Colorado no longer carried the 15W-50.  Then last week I noticed that another WalMart near Colorado Springs only carried the quarts.  This does not surprise me, since cars these days call for much lighter oil.  I'd imagine that most of the 15W-50 they sell ends up in motorcycles and older performance cars.  Too bad, because there is a limited selection of other reasonably priced auto-oils on the shelf that also work well in our bikes.

Mobil 1  15 W 50 over a 100K no problems. Nothing in the lower section of the circle. She's worth it.  I change it every 5k probably an overkill.

Thanks for the help.  15-50 is what I got.  Dealer changed oil when they got it in on trade.  I've had it 2000 miles.  Don't know if they used Dino or Synth in it.  Hoping the synth will quiet her down a tad.

I agree.   I use AMSOIL, Mobil and other oils on occasion in either bike and make sure there is no "energy conserving" indicated on the bottle anywhere (specifically that API label).

Hold it right there fellow,,,,,,,,,,,,,, there are no quick oil questions.

Shell Rotella T Synthetic is the best oil for just about anything.

5W40, but runs out in a engine like 15W40 for Diesal Purposes.

Diesel Grade Oil is of higher demand placed on diesel engines, some diesels at idle run 100 to 1

compression , Harley demands Diesel Grade Oil due to the (Does not Have to be synthetic though)

Roller Bearings on the main Crank Pin and Two Outboard Roller Bearings.

Tough Stuff and will run in just about anything.

No it will not quiet it down a bit.

Square Cut Gears will be there even if you change the

 oil.

Nature of the beast.

Not a bad thing either due to the fact square cut gears are more robust( DID I JUST SAY ROBUST).

Honda dealer synthetic oil and Honda filter.
Every  thousand miles. My dealer dude said 5k is fine.
I told him the other 2k run out in my 63 VW baja.
It has my old MC tires on the front for Glamis dunes but Car tires on the back.
There I've mentioned darkside too.     kinda.

If the 'Energy Conserving' is so bad, then why does Honda offer their oil with and without moly while recommending either to be correct? Me, Wal Mart Mobil 1 15W-50 in my Guzzi and Valkyrie.

YMMV,

Mark

This forum is exactly like a VTX forum I hang out on.  Oil/gas/tires threads don't die.  That's why I asked "Can I use this stuff?"  And not "What do you recommend.........."

Life on bikes I guess

I think a person could run vegetable oil in a bike and it would keep running.

I have seen people run nothing before and get away with it for a few minutes.

Some Harley Folks tryed this once and when the CBR 600 Crotch Rocket ran for about 30

minutes without any oil they were amazed and po'ed as well.

Run some damn oil in there and as long as it is 10w40 it will probably run for 100's of thousands of miles.
