I ended up taking my bike to Western Honda, since Champion Honda won't work on bikes over 10 yrs old. Also a Valkyrie guy who works on Valks at his home is gone out of town til after Thanksgiving. Long story short they suggested I get an K&N Air filter, so we won't have to special order them anymore which took an extra 3 days...since they don't stock Valk air fltrs anymore. I was cool with that. Picked up the bike, and rode a mile or so thru city streets and then got on a freeway ramp and gassed it and it was like wayyyyy more powerful that it ever was. I did pick up some more power abt 7 yrs ago when I put a 6º advance trigger wheel. Then I googled it up and read that some guy feels he has to use premium gas to accommodate these 2 modifications (6º trigger wheel & K&N filter. Has anyone here got a K&N filter and did you feel it was a big increase in horsepower??? Rocky, AZ USA 98 Tourer

I've had K&N's in both my Valks. Can't say I noticed a MAJOR difference, but it did seem to make them run a little more free. If I get another Valk, I'll put one in it, too.

I run the pre filter in mine. I know it ran a lot better when I put the K&N on, but the paper filter was really dirty when I switched.  I also replaced a couple of damaged vacuum caps at the same time. Hard to know which one thing I did was responsible for the majority of the improvement.

4 degree trigger wheel: noticable difference K & N filter w/o pre filter: noticable difference It nice when you absolutely notice the difference. It's money well spent!

I am also curious about this.... I have read most are not I think, but would like to revisit that.

I am also curious about this.... I have read most are not I think, but would like to revisit that. Pavalker, I believe most do run the prefilter (I do). It is called for in the application. Most of us with no trigger wheel or other exhaust/carb mods should use the prefilter. Some individual bikes may not be ill affected, but a stock bike can be leaned out, just from failing to run the prefilter (a heat issue).... it's not like the thing seriously blocks free airflow or anything.

Had my bike nearly 8 years with a K&N almost from day one....no prefilter and never had a problem with it running lean. I also run a 4 deg. T/W, aftermarket pipes, I/S springs & ICM, #38 slow jets. The 38's have only been in roughly two years so that's not the cause/effect. Last weekend running at/above 75 indicated and into a strong headwind blowing me all over the road and I still got 35 mpg. That's with a fairing and radiator pods on a Tourer, along with my big feet hanging out there in the wind. I think if you set your bike up right, you don't need the prefilter. What's the purpose of having two filters in place of one(OEM) if you're going to do that.

screw a " k&n air filter "... do you have to ride long dirt roads ?  don't waste yer money ... just something to sell ...

All of my equipment has K&N filters in them. Valk run NO pre-filter with a 6 degree wheel, I/S carb springs, Viking pipes, and ported and relieved, ran premium once on a trip out West and got pee poor mileage. Returned to Ethanol 10%, and have never looked back. I also added a spacer from BigBF in the front of the tank to let in a little bit more air. 97 Tourer w/242K + change for mileage.  09 Dodge Hemi has a cold air system on it with a K&N filter. 10 Toyota Highlander has a cold air system on it with a K&N filter. 87 Chevy stroker Trike with a circle K&N filter on top of a 750 Holley, and a modified Nascar exhaust system w/Sanderson Ceramic headers, inside and out. All these units run Ethanol 10% and have no problems......

I've used both, can't tell the difference. Neither could the dyno. Hoser  2010  2009 2009 was the K&N Both were with grumpy's exhaust tips, both were 3-4 hp more than my 1st run back in 2008, with open truck stacks.
