Any of you drafting guru's out there have a ".dxf" file of the valkyrie profile?  My son is doing some training on a new laser cutting table and I said "wouldn't it be wonderful if you can cut your dad a Cnristmas present of his Valkyrie".  He said "all I need is the .dxf file".

Any body have one??

Thanks

Here's one possibility you can read about. It has software that lets you convert a normal .jpg picture to .dxf, but it's not free. If he's going to be doing a lot of this type of work, maybe you could get him an early Christmas present of the software so he can do what you asked  him about.  cooldude

I teach High School dual credit engineering, architecture and web technology...

If he can get behind a version of AutoCAD, he can import the image as a JPEG. Then create a new layer and basically trace out the lines sing various drawing tools.  merge the elements into a single polyline...   Then delete the image layer and export what he's drawn as a .dxf file.  Unless he's planning on this thing being full sized with lots of detail, just a few basic lines and the outline should be plenty to give the appearance of a Valk.

I scanned a dimensioned drawing of a chevy rearend from the Strange Eng. catalog, used a free converter to get a dxf. Then imported into Smart-Cam and scaled it to their printed dims. It measured correct, then drew my brackets on it and unfolded them to cut out. AutoCad may be easier, but I never had time to learn that.

Once you get a silhou. there all kinds of options,  I hate to give away all my $$$ ideas

A harley outline for a swinging target, I just saw animals and a cat target at a gun show, my first idea was a John Deere outline to shoot at, (I am orange)

M$ Visio will convert a jpeg to a dxf. I just put a simple Valk picture into it and did a convert. I don't have autocad to look at it but here it is you are welcome to pass it on to your son. If it is OK in theory send me a decent Valk picture and I'll do it properly for you.

I use microstation and autocad amongst several other software packages. If you have one in mind to use, send it to me and I'll fix ya up. Of course it will be next week before I get back to that job!  Grin

Colin - Thanks, I saved the file.  My son is out East this week training on the new Laser machine.  when he gets back I'll give him the file and see what happens from there.

I'll get back with you if I need an update.
