Why would anyone shave a cow like that?

Broussard, Louisiana

« on: November 25, 2010, 10:14:15 PM »

Man, since Traveler is my only means of transport and she has been down with this darn petcock gas leak since I got home, I have not been able to get any wind (or leave the house) since I got back from Africa. Grrrrrrrrrrr.  tickedoff

So, I ordered the Pingel Valve last week and it arrived yesterday about 5:00 pm.  Whoo-Hoo.  Well, since little Red was going to need the stove/oven for cooking this morning I decided to spend yesterday (while waiting for the valve to arrive) doing my cooking yesterday.  The grandchildren were going to be picked up by their Dad at 2, so Thanksgiving was going to be lunch and she needed to get up early and make her mac and cheese, dressing, gravy, sweet potato casserole, cauliflower casserole, rolls, ham, and made some home made cookies for the G-babies.

So while Red was at work yesterday, I woke up and made a vegetable stock to brine the turkey bird in.

Put the turkey in the brine solution and let it brine for about 8 hours - as per Alton Brown and FoodTV.  Old "Sister" came out the best yet I think.  The brine really kept in the juices.

Made an apple pie as per Alton Brown as well. Man, it took about 3 hours to make this pie but worth the effort and a lot of it was just using sugar to sweat the apples and cook down the liquid before making up the pie and there was other cooking to do in the meantime.  I mean the pie called for the usual plus apple jelly, apple cider and tapioca flour.

Another recipe I got off of the FoodTV website was for a pumpkin cheesecake - rich but good.

I also made up a batch of green bean casserole (from Cambells) and from the Neely's on FoodTV, a sausage and apple dressing.  You gotta love a recipe that starts out with sweet Italian sausage, onions, celery, apples and a cup of bourbon.  Grin

Well, after cleaning up Red's kitchen so she didn't crap when she got home - why she hates for me to cook - the first thing she did when she walked into the kitchen was look at the ceiling - no trust I tell you, I went outside for a cigarette and the UPS man came and brought me.....

Whoooooo-Hooooooooo!  So, since the tank was already off Traveler, I grabbed some tools and started putting in on!  When I pulled out what should have been the screen inside the tank on Traveler, I found that the original owner must have cut the screen off - this is what came out from the inside of the tank.

After a couple of minutes, I got the new petcock installed and adjusted.

Put the tank back on and dug around the garage for one of those screw adjustment hose clamps since ChrisJ had told me that I needed one.  I was sure I had an extra but couldn't find it, so I had to wait for Red to get home from work, check out the ceiling and then borrowed her car to run to the auto store and pick up a pack of the hose clamps (since like ChrisJ said, the nipple on the Pingel is smaller than OEM, so you need the hose clamp).  Dagnab it, it was dark when I got home, so I had to wait until today to finish the install.

So, this morning, while Red did her cooking, I finished with the install, played with the G-babies and then dug on some GOOD EATS!!!!

After lunch, I set up a putting green thing in the garage and let the G-babies play some putt-putt (Dang, I need to blow out the garage I guess).  Cheesy

Right before setting up the golf thing, I told the family that I was going to ride around the block and test the valve and check for leaks.  I guess Red should have known that was not exactly true when I put on a jacket and plugged in my iPod.  So, after about 50 miles, I figured that there was no leak that I could detect and went back home.

After the family left, Red took a nap while I watched the Saints (well part of the game).  We took the nutdogs for a walk and I asked if it was ok if I rode a while.  "Go ahead".  So, got in another 50-60 miles since the temperature is suppose to drop 30 degrees by tomorrow.  (Yep, 30 degrees!)  They presently have a tornado touching down with the front coming through to the north of us.

So, it was an awesome day!  Got the fuel valve installed, got to spend time with the family, got to groove on some GOOD EATS and last, but not least, got in over 100 miles of awesome, awesome WIND!  WHOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! cooldude cooldude cooldude

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!!!!!!!  Smiley Wink Smiley

I'm thinking about doing the Pingle thing.  Is there anything special I need to do to the tank or will it just screw into the tank?
Thanks, Bernie

Should screw right on.

Be sure and use some thread sealant when ya put it on.

Make sure ya have a full circle hose clamp, and just snug it, don't try to twist the damn thing off.   All ya do then is ruin your hose for futrue use.

Then, rememer to shut it OFF everytime ya turn the key off.

If ya can't remember to do that, then get the electric version.

When mine oes bad again, I'm going electric.  Key on, it works, key off, nuttin honey will come through.

Thanks for the information!  I've never owned a bike without a manual fuel shutoff so I always cut the fuel off everytime I stop.  That shouldn't be a problem.  Still collecting things to do to the bike later in the winter.  So this just got added to my list.
Thanks again, Bernie

Lady Draco made the fork wraps.  I had ordered a set and then wrecked Shadowfax on the way to IZ5 and picked them up as soon as I got Traveler since they were the same color combination.

I love them!  Those are like 5 years old now.

That is awesome brother that you finally got some wind!  I've not rode but once since returning from vacation -- and now with being sick looks like it will be a bit (still having clutch issues with my girl to boot).  I was wondering just the other day what your status was --- and whether you made it home for the Holiday.

Now --- the "Holiday"  ---- That Alton Brown has it going on!  My beautiful daughter Kristi graciously took the lead and did 90% of all the cooking for our Holiday Feast.  My wonderful niece Rosa and Kristi's roommate Kim filled the role as her sous chefs.

She is a MAJOR Alton Brown fan -- she too made a brine for our turkey & chickens.  She had ours in the brine about 15 hours --- we've always used a cooking bags in the past but not this time --- Kristi was dead set to make hers the "Alton Brown" way.

I'm here to tell you what --- this 24 lb bird was AWESOME!!  She made an herb butter to put on his breast under the skin and oh my goodness was he tasty!!  She got a A++ on this one!!

We also roasted 2 chickens in my roaster oven --- they were also awesome!

She made sauted brussel sprouts, green beans, broccoli, mashed potatoes and of course dressing.  She made Rum Cake, Banana Pudding, Cherry Pies, Pumpkin Pies, Dutch Apple Pie and cookies.

She was determined to "Iron Chef her way through Thanksgiving" and I'm witness to the fact she did exactly that!!  What a wonderful meal she laid out for our entire family.
