We got out a bit late and up in the stand just after it was light about 640-645, hunting hours start at 650. Got situated and I gave him the game plan and we loaded up. I had just reached for my thermos and I hear the crunch of something moving through the woods. A buck about 6pts or better was moving fast through the woods. The son caught a little buck fever and I got him pointed in the right direction, and got the deer stopped but he never put "deer" and "rifle" together in time. I looked around and there is a smaller buck in trail. I get Matt pointed the right way AND get him behind the rifle, and the buck stops behind a tree about 60 yards out. I tell him to wait a second and the deer takes a step and I blow him a kiss and he stops. I tell him to shoot and he lets it go. I see the deer kip hard and I know hes done, but he bolts. The son goes "Awww no" and I say "you got him, there, he's down", as he piled up maybe 30 yards max. I tell him to wait a min to make sure it doesnt get up. I ask where he hit it and he doesnt know. I ask where were the crosshairs and he tells me, and I tell him thats where he hit it. I told him to stay in the stand and keep a eye on me and I go to the deer. Confirmed kill at 0722.

Through both lungs just above the heart, 25-06 Rem 700, 100gr Hornady blemished bullets over IMR 4350, at 3050FPS.

Update:
Daughter keeps her point spread against challenger

After I got done with hanging Matts, I went back out, Samantha came to sit with me and we sat and saw nothing till about 3. I saw a deer in the pines and I thought it was a doe, it was pretty well hidden. Sam had a different angle and she said it was a buck once she found it, I counted points by leaning out in front of her and using binoculars, there are 5, 4 small ones on the left and the other side is a spike. There was a shot but it would be threading the needle through 2 trees and she made the call not to. It was pretty hard on her to wait but she did, then he laid down. Something spooked him after about 20 min and he hopped up and trotted a bit, stopped behind a tree, and Sam was ready. It took a couple steps and I grunted and the 30-30 spoke. She hit him a little low. He ran about 40 yards to the east, stopped and ran 15 yards North and piled up.

However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.

Really enjoyed the read and the pics. The best times I've ever had were spending time in the woods with the boys when they were young and I almost was. cooldude

And nothing teaches kids ethics, honesty and good judgment better than hunting. At least, nothing I know of. Congrats on being the kind of Dad more kids should have. Please tell the kids congrats from us.
