I could use some input please. taking my gdaughter (14 years old) on her 2-3 day motorcycle trip this summer. she lives in atlanta, ga. she likes sweepers but not a big fan of extreme twisties. one year we went from atlanta to gatlinburg, up over the mountains. 2-3 hours of twisties, switchbacks, etc which sure got old after a while. so, looking for a destination within a 300 mile radius of atlanta for her trip. charlotte on the east, knoxville north, nashville west, birmingham, charleston SC, Destin Fl.? kinda anywhere within those parameters. natchez trace? BRP? Cherohola Skyway? it's gonna be a good trip and the planning is half the fun.

Ask her where she would like to go. Used to work for me when my kids were riding all over the good old US of A. You would be surprised what they would like to see, if allowed to offer the place.

I was on a trip with my friend a few years ago and we stopped in Destin, FL for gas. It was the worst experience of the whole trip. I almost got into a fight with an old man because I couldn't pump the 7 gallons of gas and get outta his way fast enough. He threatened to knock my bike over if I didn't get outta his way. Then, once I did get outta his way, I pulled into the adjoining parking lot. Some person decided to walk by directly in front of me and - without being provoked in any way - make some snide comments. I have no idea what was up with that. Perhaps he was trying to show off for the young lady accompanying him. I know these are only 2 people out of the thousands and thousands in Destin. But, as far as I'm concerned - I won't be going through there again if I can help it.

You said summer. Most of those places will be hot, and many of them trafficky... (emphasis on icky )... You'd have a hard time paying me to ride from Atlanta to Charleston SC on a hot summer day... You should be able to find a way to get to the BRP without being on the super twisties for too long... the BRP is great in the summer... This route has some twisty between Franklin and Maggie Valley, then you could float off down the cool BRP for an hour or so towards Brevard, come back down a twisty hill (276) to hwy 11, and then get back to Atlanta in about 3 hours from there... http://tinyurl.com/2dtp8fn <------ google map -Mike

3 hours of twisties ....You must have been in Heaven As already stated it get's hotter than the hinges of hell here in the south in the summer....The Blue Ridge Parkway....It's like ridin' in God's air conditioner with beautiful mountain views and some awesome sweepers. It's 469 miles long and makes for a nice two day ride while stopping to smell the roses.

i've asked her and for 2 years the only place she wanted to go was to my moms house in NC. that was our plan. well, mom died 1 year ago today and my gdaughter hasn't been able to come up with any place else she really wants to go. she wants to go, just doesn't know where. i'm so thankful the gkids loved my mom so much, she was a lot of fun and just a great lady. i miss her greatly. my gdaughter and i will spend time looking at maps and talking about destinations when i'm there for christmas. i'm so glad she wants to go with me. for the gkids, when the go from jr hs to hs i take them on a bike trip if they want. they have all wanted to go.......life is good.

. ...like Britman said...Outer Banks....specifically a tiny little island called..Ocracoke island. You ride up to the tip of Cape Hatteras..past Jockeys Ridge..(largest moving natural sand dune on the east coast)...its so big they give hang gliding lessons off the side of it. You also go past the memorial where the Wright Brothers took their first flight.
Once at the tip of Hatteras, you take a "free" ferry ride out to Ocracoke Island, it takes about 30 minutes to get there. (Yes, lots of bikes make this trip).Once there you are at the very tip of the Island, its 13 miles long and about a mile or so wide at the widest point. One road transverses the lenght of the Island, Rt 2. The island has been designated a National Sea Shore, so about 10 miles from the ferry to town is completely undeveloped, and you can stop anywhere and walk out to the beach, and it,s all yours with no one around. It feeds off the Gulf Coast, so the waters are a beautiful blue green ..clean and nice a refreshing tempature. Right past the ferry is a National Park, where you can camp right off the dunes and the ocean lulls you to sleep at night. I turned Chili on to this camping site, and have taken her and her son there a few times. You can go out to the beach at night and build a nice beach fire, its very cool...you can almost feel the ghost of Black Beard in the air.
Ocracoke Island was a port back in the 1700,s and was also a favorite hiding place for the famed pirate...Black Beard. As a matter of fact he was killed by the British right outside the inlet in town. The entire island is steeped in history from the tiny British Sailor Cemetary in town, where you can see grave stones dating back to the early 1700,s...and Black Beard is very popular theme there, with tours and stories given by the Rangers. You can also go on a very cool ...sun set cruise on a this three masted sloop, and the Captain will let you hoist the sails and take the wheel and steer it. You can either camp in the National Park, or stay at a mom and pop motel, or regular hotel. They put a mortorium on "large buildings" a few years back, limiting how many stories high they can be, to try and keep the place quaint. The sun sets in town are beautiful, and tourist flock to the docks every night to see them. If you go though I would say to go in the early summer or early fall, as it does get VERY hot there during the summer.

My vote for what you are looking for would be the Blue Ridge Parkway. Gentle sweepers and beautiful scenery. Wherever you decide I know you will have a great time. Grandkids make life worth living for us old farts. Ride safe. Hef
