I'm thinking about getting my dad a universal remote. He says he needs 5 remotes, or he has to pay the Direct tv guy to come and program his remote.
I need something so easy even my father could do it.

Any thoughts?

I was looking at the Harmony remotes. Web base programming. They look pretty slick.

My kids got me a Logitech remote and I know it replaces 4 others.

It comes with PC software.
You load the software,
find the model
it displays what it can and can't do.

You pick what ya want from the menu.

Hit da button, it will either tell ya that ya screwed up or to downlaod it to the remote.

Been running mine now for about 5 or 6 years,     NO problem, even for an old crusty/salty bastard like me.

1 I have is on the right.   Harmony One Advanced Universal

Expensive, but so far it has been worth it.

So call me stupid.
My son got me a Harmony remote a year or two ago. Just a little something to control my TV, Blu-Ray player, satellite and the Yamaha HT receiver. Yeah...
It sat on my coffee table for a year or so, untouched. I gave it back my son.... crazy2

My Direct TV remote runs my DVD player, surround sound amp, TV and Direct TV box. There is a page in the back of the Direct TV book that gives the codes for almost every electronic devise. You just punch in the code for what you wan to control.

If it would help (it did me) you can get different colored Sharpie markers and color code buttons and/or remotes for him.

"Harmony One"! Anybody can set it up and it works like a charm! I certainly wouldn't want to give it up and never will unless times get really hard. It's the Valkyrie of universal remotes.

It controls all my devices with absolutely no hassle whatsoever.

Samsung TV
Apple TV (Rents movies from the iTunes store)
Blu-Ray player
U-Verse box (Same as cable receiver)
Surrund sound system
Sirius satellite receiver

It's extremely simple to program and set it up for your system. The software takes you to their website where you pick your devices from a list and it pretty much sets everything up for you.

You set it up for "Activities" that you name to suit yourself such as "Watch TV" - Watch DVD" - Listen to Radio" - Sirius" - "Apple TV" - Play CD"  ---- and so forth. Touch the chosen activity on the touch screen and it turns on the devices it needs and sets them to the proper input and turns off any that it doesn't need.

So easy a caveman can do it!

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/remotes/universal-remotes/devices/6441

Shop around for prices. As far as I'm concerned it's worth every darn penny!

Roadkill, I'm the same way. Recently went to Radio Shack for something and the little darlin' behind the counter noticed my cell hanging on the belt. "Oh" she squealed, "you have a cell phone." I answered "gee honey, can't slip anything past you, can we?"  Then she wanted to know how old it was, told her I figured at least 3 yrs., probably more. I was then informed it's time for a new one....then she launched into all the wonderful things their new ones will do, using AT&T, which is also my service provider. Not once did she mention anything about making/receiving calls so I asked "can I make and receive phone calls on it?" "Well....yes!" "Well, so does this one so guess I don't need a new one." I thought the other two guys and a half dozen customers would split a gut laughing, she just stood there staring as I walked out.

As for remotes, we have one for each TV...all five of them(not my idea). They're all Sonys, as are the DVD players so the remotes  also operate the TV's. The only other item that uses a remote is the CD player which is hooked up to the main sound system for the house and pool patio. I wish I knew where it is, probably should remove the batteries so they don't leak and ruin it.

Still haven't figured out why we needed a TV in the kitchen, but the kitchen is larger than the dining room so at least it's not in the way.

If someone ever finds a universal remote that works on stupid people, please let me know... There's a few I'd like to use the MUTE button on, a few that need the PAUSE button pushed, and a handful that need the STOP button pressed on... Sure would be nice to use on inattentive cagers while riding too!

My vote is for the Harmony One, got one me and my youngest son love it the wife and the older son don't share the same love with the Harmony one.

It is really easy just take your time and carefully follow step by step Instructions and you will be fine.
It is really cool you get to use your PC to program it and if it ever gets broken then buy a new one and just load the configuration from the PC. The touch screen contral is way cool and easy just touch the picture(with the name if what you prefer to call it) what you want and use the regular buttons below the screen like any other remote you are already used to using.

Harmony One by Logitech (in the words of Billy Maze) 2 cooldude cooldude way up

I'm with you there. I went to look at cell phones and I had one in mind, the Tundra, water proof, shock proof, and makes phone calls... they tried to show me the latest and greatest... I said " I want one that I can drop, and I might drop it in the water too, and I want to be able to make a receive phone calls,  will any of those do that... they went and got my Tundra. That thing will take a beating...

Now that's funny right there.  Sorta like a twilight zone episode, but funny.  I'd pay decent money for one of those.  "Hey honey, comeere and let me mute you."

Harmony remote cooldude cooldude even my wife is able to use it. One thing nice if you go to help it asks you what is on and off and whats happening to then automatically does what it needs and asks you if that solved the problem. Like I said I set it up but the wife can use it and can actually solve a problem if something doesn't do what its supposed to do.

I can call myself stupid, my wife can call me stupid, but Iwould never have called my father stupid, and my son had better not call me stupid,  I would hope I raised him better than that. Hoser  Angry

I never saw the word "stupid" in Jeff K 's statement. I read " set in his ways with no time for all this remote control B.S. ! "   Hell,I can relate to that!!!! Smiley

Decided to go with the Harmony one. Lots of good things said about it. I figure I can set it for him at Christmas and that way I can help him if he has trouble.
But, now Joann wants one for our house too.  Roll Eyes

Thanks for all the input.  Grin  Well almost all the input. Roll Eyes

If he has Direct TV their remote is fairly universal.

He can call their customer service number and they will walk him through the setup process for free.

I don't have direct tv but from what I remember of his system/ remote It wasn fool proof. He said, and I remember, that some one unfamiliar with the remote can easily push buttons that screw everything up. He said if you have visitors, they won't be able to use the remote without "training".

But like I said I don't have DTV so I don't know how complex it is.

I have to walk him through problems on his PC and I'll tell you, it is hell trying to figure out what he is doing when his screen isn't showing the same thing as mine. He has Vista, and I'm still running XP.
What a pain. Joann has Windows 7 not so I can hop on hers and try to figure out where he is lost.
We both have limited internet access at home, or I'd just take over his PC...

I may have to get my wife one of these Harmony remotes. I personally don't mind using several remotes, but it is frustrating for her to the point that she won't watch tv without me. I hope she doesn't think it falls into the "appliance" catagory, because I know better than to buy her one of those for Christmas!

I remember when I was a kid I was the household remote! We only had four black/white channels and I could flip through them pretty quick. I was even programed to fetch beers from the fridge. If the Harmony remote will do that I will enjoy it more than my wife!

Joann has already said "we are getting one of those". I come home from work and get... "I don't know what I did but now nothing works" She gets lost in the sea of remotes. usually she just switches the input by mistake.

Maybe 2
Last night Joann wanted to watch TV in bed but because it wasn't possible to turn on the TV she couldn't. Huh? I said I know that remote works. She couldn't figure it out.
Push TV
Push ON

I'm surprised her knows where she is when she wakes up.  2funny

To be honest though, she had moved the TV to paint and didn't plug it back in so the remote was pretty useless... 2funny
