I thought i was the only 1 remembering about green motorcycles, hats on the bed,& yes i have an inside pocket in my Levi jkt..
I've even got 2 bells given to me by a couple of people.

I don't think the bells care..........

Currently have 3 on the Harley, all gifts from riding friends. Also try to hit a bike blessing each year.

I thought bells were a motorcycle thing. I knew about the hat on the bed and green motorcycles, but the gun pocket is a new superstition for me.

Levi used to make their jackets with only breast pockets so we'd take a rear pocket off an old pair of jeans and sew it inside. Not a superstition but something customary.
I'm not sure when I first saw a bell on a bike but I don't recall seeing them when I was a youngster. For some reason I have the idea they came out of Oakland, CA. Maybe RJ knows.

My understanding is it came about during the early 1900s to warn livestock a motorcycle was coming. The bells used then were cow bells. Afterward, the bells got smaller and the story changed to what we know today. IIRC, it is lucky to buy the bell for yourself but it is twice as lucky if someone gives you the bell. The bell on Sandman was given to me by a nurse on ShadowRider.com when I had my 750 ACE 3 years ago. When I sold it, I took the bell off and put it on my then new Valk.

That makes sense.
I was thinking that it was more directly related to the gremlins that plagued aircraft in the second world war, though.
