« on: December 23, 2010, 04:44:36 PM »

I've started this thread several times only to delete it and start over trying to find the best way to share this experience we had today. Most of you know when we take a ride I'll take the best picture ( in my minds eye ) and call it " The Money Shot " . Well today the money shot saved a life I hope. We rode up to Deal's Gap today and made a couple passes across The Dragon and on the way home I took us out The Foothills Parkway . I pulled into a overlook to get a shot of my bike with the snow covered mountains in the background. I rode right by this car with a young woman in it that looked to be asleep. My bike is pretty loud with the Cobra's and Big Al was on his Kawasaki Mean Streak that is loud as well. After taking the picture I got a uneasy feeling about this young lady the car was'nt running and the temp's on the mountain was in the low 30's. Soon the entire group shared my uneasy feeling. Big Al and Greg went to the car and Al knocked on the window Greg walked around the car and said she's got a suicide note in the seat.No one had cell service so I jumped on my bike and took off like a bat out of hell until I got service. 4 Park Rangers 1 Blount County Deputy and 2 EMT's claimed if we had not stopped she would have died. I'm very proud of my ridin' buddies each one of them worked the entire time trying to help this young woman while we waited on help to arrive the first showed up about 30 minutes after I made the call.....Her name is Amanda and she took several different medications trying to end her life. We called about a hour after they took her to the ER and was told she is stable....Please say a prayer for her that she will find help.

Thanks, Joe and company, for getting involved. Lots of folks wouldn't have bothered. I'm sure her family is thankful as well.

Thanks for sharing Joe.  You guys saved a life for sure.  It always helps to be aware of your surroundings and not ride through life with blinders on.  Some people wouldn't have noticed that the car wasn't running...

Amanda            is stable in a Hospital.

A gift of a life that was spared.

What a miracle life is.

Joe stated above that we found this lady, really a young lady that was in the throws of

taking her own life.

Joe pulled over and noticed something odd about what he was seeing.

Greg, being sharp eyed, noticed a note in her lap.

She was nonresponsive.

If help had not arrived when it did, in the form of a Park Ranger, and ambulance crew with

narcan to administer, the outcome would have been grim.

Greg at one point was in the car with a breathing bag that the ranger had in his paramedic kit,

asisting her breathing.

Everyone there was helping to keep this lady alive.

These fellers I ride with are good samaritans,  at the very least.

Damn Good Men to know and ride with.

Thanks

First, for Amanda, let me say, thank you to you, Al, and Greg... you saved a life today! That is not anything to be taken lightly. It is a shame that many people take their own lives so lightly sometimes. As an almost 20 year police officer, I unfortunately have seen my share of the ones who attempt, and the ones who complete the act. There was even one who committed the act because of me (I think about it EVERY day).

The one thing they never realize is how their actions affect the ones who love them. Years later, I have contact with those families and you can still see the pain on their faces, in their actions, might I say, even in their souls.

You guys didn't just save a life today, you saved the lives of Amanda's family and friends who don't have to live with the burden of what they would of, or might of done to help her with whatever pain pushed her to this. Hopefully, Amanda will find the support that she needs to truly understand the reasons for her despair, and will receive the tools she needs to deal with those reasons, and move on to a happy, fulfilling life. That support started with you guys today!

To Joe and company.... well done gentleman!  Wouldn't you know that it would take an observant motorcyclist to even pick up on this.  Most would go merrily on their own way.

To ptgb, that is a very insightful post.  I had a very good lifetime friend kill himself in a pretty gruesome manner, while on the phone with his soon to be ex-wife (all his fault).  It was an extremely selfish, self-pittying act that hurt everyone that loved him ...... and there were a bunch of us.

WOW! How many lives were affected by your (all of you) simple act.

She set many wheels in motion that would affect many lives and you stopped that process, at least for today. I hope she will get some help, but you've given her that chance.

In life there are those who live it and participate in its greatness and those who watch it go by.

Gentlemen your participation and careing has hopefully changed the life of someone who was before unable to change it on her own.

Sometimes in life acts of greatness are forgotten by man as time passes by. But the man above never forgets!

You guys are all hero's in my book!

To all the crew...  I've always said that as a biker, you need a 'sixth sense', or a 'voice'...  Something that you feel, or just know...  I know I listen to mine, all the time.  You guys 'listened to that voice today, and saved more than one life...  Good on ya, and I couldn't be happier with the outcome  cooldude

All of you made sure her (parents, grandparents, children, friends) will never associate Christmas with the day she died...

I believe in prevention.  Knowing what others have experienced and using that knowledge to prevent experiencing the same effects. So, my question is, what made her want to end her life?  What was so bad?  Is there something I can learn to prevent my own child from attempting the same?

Death is a funny thing, we’re all going to experience it, we’re all never ready.

On another note, you should take her picture off, or at least blur out her face.  It’s quite eerie.  It’s kind of like “rubber necking” an accident.........

I have a 17 year old daughter; she once had the same Leigh on her rear view mirror.  She has made some stupid choices in the last couple of weeks, and all I can think of is how devastated I would be if she did the same as the girl in your post.  (yeah, that’s me always thinking of myself…..)

If this one is not Valk related...I do not know what is....
This could be a title for a folk legend " fire breathing dragon saves a life"
I am proud of my fellow dragon riders. After all this is the season, to do the things, for the right reason. The power of the dragon was used to its finest form, to speed off to summon help, to save a life. Yes ,this is how legends are born. Not planned just happen. Gentlemen, I salute you for taking the time to be vigillant, for doing the right thing. God will bless each and every one of you for your actions. Dragons are not myth's, they are real. They are here to stay.  I say ride on dragon riders ,ride on, may your miles be many. The joy of a thousand angles ride with you. The love of the Son and God's peace upon you.

I talked to Amanda's father late last night ....She is in the intensive care unit on life support and as of last night still unresponsive and in a coma. He said the doctors told him they hope to know more today as to brain , kidney damage etc. It does not sound good for her as of now. We talked for about 30 minutes and he said he would call me this evening to let me how she is doing.....A Christmas miracle is needed .

Joe, as Dave said, you were doing the Lord's work.  What all of you have done is a great thing.

I'll also say that it doesn't surprise me. Starting with you,  Joe,  every one that I've met in the VRCC would've done the same.  None would've sit back and said it's not my problem.

I just read your post.  It was a good thing that you pulled her pic, for more than one reason.

My dirt bike riding buddies came upon a similar scene once, but it was too late for them to do anything but
call the police. It was more than sobering, it was a real downer for them...  I'm glad it wasn't too late for my
street bike riding buddies to do something... good work men...
