I took a ride yesterday, about 180 total, to attend a good friend and VRCC member's memorial service. (not the way I wanted to take a New Year's Day ride, but I'm glad I went) The bike just seemed more noisy than it has in the past after a good high speed run. OK...so you don't think 80mph is a high speed run, but it is for us old farts. Anyway, I now have Royal Purple in the bike and don't have more than a couple thousand miles on it, but I'm thinking I want to change early due to the general gear noise. I know the Valk has gear whine at/about 50-55 which normally will go away with higher speed. This seems to stay with me throughout the speed range, so I'm looking for some suggestions. Up until the last change, I had been running Amsoil synthetic but only had one quart left and couldn't get it soon enough so went with the Royal Purple. I'm seriously thinking of going with the 10w30/30 HD diesel that CA Exhaustcoatings uses, just not sure where to get it but there are a few dealers in this area. What has been your experience?

I think that any time you change to a "Dino" from synthetic you are going to go through the "sound barrier"

Although I don't use a synthetic oil I know they are extremely slippery oils and have a very good quieting affect on noise emanating from transmissions

There are also some who say that changing back to "Dino" from synthetic is, fraught with peril, but yet cannot reveal any real substantiation.

You'll probably just have to live with it!   "Trust me, I'm a Doctor"  Grin

John, I noticed engine noise yesterday also. (not yours, mine)
I also am running a new oil to the bike and had previously only run Amsoil. I noticed it at idle, almost like an arching sound. I thought maybe time for valve adjustment? I can't hear a darn thing running down the road, just a headache Shocked

Doug, I'm going to try and make it over to the Deland Flea Mkt. this Wednesday. They have an Amsoil dealer there and he sells it about $3/qt. less than you can get it in a shop. I've used Amsoil for the last few years, but at the last change the guy I used to get it from didn't have what I wanted in stock, so I tried the Royal Purple. I got the "royal" alright.  Angry  I'll never use it again.

Interested in knowing what happens after you put the Amsoil back in.

Mobil 1 4T 10W40 full synthetic available at Wallyworld about $9 a qrt.
Switched from Rotella 5W40 full syn at 100K with no problems. Have yet to adjust the valves, no noise...... except for the gear noise.  Roll Eyes
Might want to give that a try.

Eddie, I assume that doesn't have any "energy conserving" stuff to mess up the clutch. Certainly would be less expensive than Amsoil, but with the mileage I put on each year I wouldn't need more than one...possibly two, changes per yr. anyway so expense isn't really a factor. The only time I used Mobil 1 was in the second year I had the bike and within 100 miles I got some slippage when I hit it hard. Drained it immediately and never used Mobil 1 again. At the time it was the "recommended" version for our bikes also. I checked the hydraulics and it wasn't that, so it pretty much left it to the oil since the bike only had about 7500 on it.

I went to Mobil-1 full synthetic 15w-50. Many here use it and recommend it. I can't attribute it to the oil yet. It's just that's when I noticed the sound. Could be as simple as, I was idling in the garage (echo chamber) which I don't normally do and I was close to the engine checking for leaks when I noticed it. This is also thicker than the Amsoil 10-40 I was previously using. I would think if anything it would be a little quieter??? I did check my torque on header bolts and tightened up my intake boots, no joy, still got the noise (tapping, ticking) Guess I'm gonna have to pull the tank and look for bad rubber or something banging around, loose clamps, as Thunderbolt suggested. I was thinking of valve adjustment although not many of us have ever really had an issue with that.
Let me know what you find John.

It's the only one Mobil recommends for wet clutch applications in motorcycles.  Kinda expensive, but you only do it a couple of times a year.  Worth it in my opinion.  I tried the Shell Rotella T, didn't like it, smelled bad, made the whole bike stink.  I dumped it like you are considering doing right away.

This morning I called the Amsoil dealer near me, his price for a gallon of 20w50 is $33.10, same stuff I used before with good results. I ordered a gallon plus a qt. of 75w90 for the rear end to have on hand. At $33.10 plus tax for the oil....that's less than $9/qt.  Pretty good price, pick it up in a day or two when I get a chance to run by his place....which is about 5 min. away.

Seriously, I starting using the Mobil 1 4T on Terry's recommendation & it did quiet down the gear whine a bit. The "Rotella Smell" Terry alluded to was present on my bike as well but it didn't bother me as much as it did Terry. Shocked I figured at 100K what the heck, time for a switch.
I still have Rotella full syn. 5W40 in the both Kim's '98 & the black '99. Don't notice any smell from them but they are both a little tighter than the '97.
Probably will keep using the Rosmella in them.
Glad you found the Amsoil at a good price John. cooldude

He's right Eddie, I am about deaf from riding that motorsickle. Maybe if I finish my pipes with the steel-packs I'll be hearing even more bad news?? Maybe I should leave it loud and I won't be hunting strange noises ???

Might be for some time to come. I was wearing a vest while riding the bicycle about 2 mo. ago and felt a sting in back of the right shoulder. A large black hornet was caught in the arm hole of the vest and hit me three times before I squashed him. Swelled up and spread to the size of two silver dollars, then the skin turned hard. It's still discolored and the skin is tough in that spot. Might try some mink oil on it, works on leather.  Cheesy

sound waves are affected by temp, humidity and ground surface. This is the reason reviews of stereo equipment are bogus with all their fancy words of how it sounds.
this info can also be used for exhaust sound level tests inspections of vehicles to ones advantage.

Went from Rotella Syn 5w40 to Mobil Delvac last summer without any problems. The person who helped me change out my clutch damper plate suggested it. He runs it in all of his bikes.

It is a diesel oil. No noticable increase in noise. Of course I am getting old and may just be a little death!

I have a final drive whine between a certain speed range on my VTX, and it is due to those big honking flat  cut  gears so I have been told. I don't notice any whine on the Valk tho.   I have found that synthetic gear oil does make a difference, but there is still some kind of whine... it's just less noticeable with some fresh synthetic oil.  If it's an engine RPM noise, then that is different... but you mentioned speed... so I'm thinkin final drive noise???

I have a daughter your age....you're not old, but I'm getting there.  Wink  I changed my oil back to the Amsoil 20w50, just in time for the rain yesterday. No chance to ride today, but did get it warmed up good going around the block(block is 2 miles around with a golf course in the center). It's noticeably quieter, but need to give it a good run on the 417.

PS: You meant "deaf" not "death"....right?
