Just Riding The Many Storms Of Life

One or both of these questions have probably been answered but I'll give it a shot anyway:
1. A co-worker of mine has an '89 Harley ex-police bike(poor guy Grin).  He was talking about the bigger cam that it has, of course making it run faster than most bikes. Another co-worker has the 2009 Yamaha Venture Royal Star.  He sez its fast too.  Yeah, right uglystupid2 We were talking about my Valkyrie I/S and told them she was good looking and fast.  They haven't challenged me but they want to know how fast Wall-E is.  Being a smart a** I told them fast enough for them Grin.  I remember seeing a Valkyrie dressed up for a sheriff's department.  Not too sure where it came from though.  My question is this, do the cop shops hop up their bikes or spec their bikes to run faster?  If so I wonder if the Valkyries I have seen with the cops and HOV scooters have been hopped up or not.  2. Second question, I know that nobody out there has ever been out hot rodding their Valkyries. Roll Eyes  I know that we don't know anyone or anything about such things as exceeding the speed limit or anything like that Roll Eyes.  I wanted to know if anyone has read anything or if there is a web site that shows what speed the Valkyrie I/S is doing at red line in each gear.  I had it figured out for my old bike ('83 V-65 Magna), but haven't talked to anyone about the Fat Lady yet.   Just curious. angel Grin Cheesy

In response to your second question - the service manager at a local Honda dealership told me that he had one just like my 2000 IS and that from "0" and taking each gear to redline he hit 132.  I guess I'll just take his word for it!!

As for the 1st question: I've never heard of any police depts hopping up their bikes. No money in city budgets for that. Your buddy is dreaming or BSing.

My guess is the Valkyrie should be able to out run, turn, stop and accelerate either of your 'buddies' bikes.

Enjoy the ride,

135 on a standard. I have hit rev limiter in 4 gears, but have not pushed enough in top gear to hit limiter. Would loved to have had GPS to get better numbers. Just glad I didn't get an accurate reading from a LEO.

I will not lie, I usually top end all my vehicles once.

Hopefully when RJ gets to feeling better, he can chime in with first-hand experience about whether or not police bikes are modified.

I have seen newer ('90s) HD police bikes for sale that have larger engines than the base model had.  HD has a number engine upgrade paths so it is plausible that your buddy's bike's engine has been "upgraded".

97 tourer.  I'm told by a reliable source that with a 4 mile run and hittin it in all five gears he did 135 in the speedo and 6 1/4 on the tach. Musta been the limiter doin its job.
She was singin and I dont think the fuel was touching the sides of the bowl.
My friend says he'll do it again if the chance comes along. There were some nice bikes on that ride and none of em could/would stay with me,,,er,,,,,,,,my friend I mean.

128 on a Tourer ,,,,,,,, 118 on a Interstate before I removed the baffles.

125 on a Mean Streak

145 on a ZRX1200R Kasasaki

140 on a Concours 1000 with out the bags and a good tail wind

100 on my Flht

105 on my KLR 650, downhill

No tickets to show for it.

Priceless.

98 standard with Tour bags, smallwind screen. I backed out at 128 Cheesy. Rev limiter shuts things down at 7150.

You will never hit the rev limiter on a stock Valk in 5th.

Look at the pretty bird on the windshield.

98 standard, Honda windshield and leather bags, 80k miles, 120 and ran out of road. 2008 Wing, stock, 125 on same road, ran out of room on both before maxing out.

PS ... stereo on the wing sounds better, lol

On my 03 standard I hit 130 w/o windshield and that was at/near redline.
Same bike with Mem Shades slightly over 120. Haven't tried my 98 yet.

I recently bought a 2005 Harley Police Bike for resale. It runs great, but no way would it outrun my valkyrie. The only info I can find on the HD Police bikes shows only the 2007 and up have added performance over stock Harleys. All Police bikes have larger charging systems for all the electrical equipment that they carry, and come stock with flat proof tires.

After working at the HD dealer here for a while, the older police bikes do have a little bit more (maybe 10%) over stock. I believe they quit doing that in the late 90's. Don't worry, I've since found a new job! On the flipside... HD does make some very nice bikes, they just sound like they're going faster than they really are!

The Honda ST1300P police version is indeed modified for police use. Instead of able to go 145+ the police models are limited to 125. Go figger.

The specification bid sheet for CHP motorcycle contract is 16 pages long. They used Beemers for several years. Beemer had a buy-back program if certain criteria was met when rig was retired.  The current contract spec for engine was: minimum 980cc, minimum 2 cylinders, minimum 70 HP, 5 gallon fuel tank capacity, fuel injection and operate knock free at all engine/vehicle speeds with mfg's recommended octane rating.  In 2010 the 1400 Connie got the nod. The Kaw deal comes with 3 year / 60K mile warranty. No way of knowing, but I doubt the department's shop pumps up the performance any. They most likely retire them at 100K miles, or less depending on repair cost history.

Hello all. Could not help but respond to this post since I am a Police Motor Officer. We are currently on BMW but are looking at other bikes at this time. Almost all Police Motors have a beefed up charging system and batteris. The BMW acyually has two batteries. The main battery provides power for the starter and the other electical needs of a BMW. The second battery provides power for the police radio, siren, blue lights, and radar system. As far as police Motors having high performance upgrades, I am not aware of any other then the HD having the bigger engine installed. The reason the ST1300 is limited to approximately 125 MPH has to do with not needing a higher speed, but with being able to get up to speed faster. What happens is that top end gets traded for getting to the top end faster. This is all done by changes to the CPU. My Department tested the HD, the ST1300 and the Kaw Connie. None of us liked the HD. The ST1300 and Kaw Connie (1400) are better bikes. The best motor of all is really the Valk, then the BMW and then the ST and Connie, (IMHO). I just wanted to share my thoughts on this topic. Thanks.

The performance measure for speed and acceleration on the bid sheet:
1/4 mile standing start > 85 mph in < 15 seconds. 1/4 mile flying start accelerate from 50 to > 90.
With twelve pages of detailed specs to meet, the successful bid came in at $17K per copy.
