Hey All,

Have read most of the old posts, but I know things change.....

I am looking for a new rear for my 2000 I/S.....

I am only looking for a MC tire.... (not starting a conversation/argument here.... Darkside rules!  just not in my garage..lol!)

What's the best overall deal you guys have seen recently??????

I just need the tire... will be puling it to do splines and shaft myself.. have a shop to mount it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Brad

You may have to do the nut cage if you go to 200mm. Depends on your weight and if you ride 2 -up. 2 up is a definite unless she weighs 100 lbs.

You are correct, Sir.  I did not on the first tire and had slight rubbing on the left side.  Did the nut job while installing the next tire.

Bout 235 here and seldom run 2 up... but most likely go with the 180.

I've heard/read comments about poor mileage (tire, not fuel) from the Bridgestone Battleaxe 200s. Avon makes a 200 also but it costs more. Anyone have experience with either tire. I'm thinking about trying a 200.

I liked my 200 Metzler. Traction was better. Never went back to a 180. Now it does leave a wider flat spot when it wears. I usually got 15k out of my rear.

I weigh 330 and I run the 200. I can not say how much my wife weighs in at ( I know better ) and we ride 2 up and I have never had any rubbing troubles. Go with the 200 nut mod or not.

+1...That's my all time favorite riding/handling tire I've tried on my Valkyrie.  I was never able to get more than 9-10k out of it. That's ok with me, spline time anyway. I will be going back IF I can ever show any signs of wear on my current CT.
Looks good too, fills out that rear fender cooldude

The best deal I got was from Jake Wilson last winter. The tires seem to be cheaper in winter months, than in summer or riding season. I bought both E3's and Avon Cobras.

i see these posts and ???  I have a new Avon Cobra 180 rear tire in garage for several months to replace my current Dunlop (front Avon for E-3 replaced a couple months ago and like it).  Why go to 200 when OEM is 180? Not a darkside v. MC tire question, but what is advantage/disadvantage if any between 180/200.  I like handling with current tires so why go to larger rear??  Undecided

I did the nutcage mod. Just because I was already in there and didn't want to have to come back and do it again. I don't think it was needed for me, but will never know?
Several others I ride with did not need  to do the nutcage. But then again I needed to shim my fender when I went to a CT. They did not need to? I guess the bikes can differ slightly.

Cause it fits!  Grin I had better traction on the street and off road. Going up a muddy slope at camp was a breeze with the 200. For me it was the looks and traction.

My bike came with the Avon Venoms, I switched it to a Metz in front and a Bridgestone Battalax in back... can't complain about grip on either end... The Venoms were great until they got down to the wearbars... then they were downright scary. It felt like my front end was going to wash everytime I went around a corner, even when it was bone dry on good pavement. We'll see what the Metz does...

How do the Cobras wear and last?

I usually get Cobras, I like them fine. Wanted to try something different, got Metzlers last time,
they aren't wearing as well, other than that I like them fine too... I have a new rear Cobra ready to be
installed, a bucket upgrade, some X-tra large zip ties and some new tire irons, will have pictures
as soon as I get a chance to ride a few hundred more miles on the Metzler and a non-frosty day
to pull the wheel (I do maintenance outside)...

Be sure to check out Jake Wilson - they often have the best price.  http://www.jakewilson.com/

I'm running the 200 Cobra on the back - 2nd time now.  When I replaced the completely worn out old one - there was no difference in feel with the new 200.  That has never happened to me before - with 180 tires.  It's clear to me, the new 200 has a contact point that's about the same as a worn 200, even with a flat spot.

Here's my 200 Cobra - actually the first one, I recently replaced.  BTW, I installed ride-on in the new tire, after punching a big hole in the new tire and the patch-plug was leaking.  Now the ride is really smooth.  I'll be using ride-on from now on.  It dynamically balances, same as dyna beads.

Yes but not for this tire.  I tried out the darkside before this tire, and that's when I did the mod.  Can't say if it would be necessary for this tire.  And there are variances between bikes from what I've read, so my experience might not apply to your bike anyway.  Really, it's no big deal.  Even if you have to do it, it's only once and very easy to do with basic tools.  I'd say a Dremel with a fiber-reinforced steel cutoff wheel and perhaps a flex drive attachment would be ideal.  I'm sure many other tools could be used as well.

Well, I don't really want to do the Mod because I have to remove those screws quite ofter as I have an interstate and run Super Valk most of the time, but if going on a long trip I add the trunk and the IS seat. I have the solo seat rail and a standard seat that has to come off along with a fender cover, so I have to take those screws out like once a month. So Id hate to get the tire on and find out I have to get another tire..... However I do like the idea of the bigger tire!!!!!!

I can reach my nut by reaching under the fender. Its not to bad, I tighten it every spring as a double check.
