"In this economy" I thought hiring a couple of industrial mechanics would be easy. Nope But I will say that there are a ton of people applying that have no skills, or construction skills. They won't do me any good.

There's also a lot of people out there that don't want to work. They would rather live off the state. I just had a front desk position open up and I offered it to 3 people before someone accepted the job. Some people are just putting in applications just to satisfy unemployment requirements. Every time I set up interviews, only about half of the people show up.

I see the same thing. The labor pool is short on qualified, skilled workers, and long on unskilled workers. I think technology has a big effect on this, as unskilled labor is becoming more and more obsolete, and not all people can convert to educated, skilled workers.

Well, my 1:00 interview went to hell. He forgot to mention that he is on probation for a felony. Downloading and promoting porn on the internet. I said since when is that a felony? Well... some of them were under age... Ok, let me show you the exit... And this guy had everything I needed. No wonder he is still looking for work with all of his skills...

Sorry, but riding the system for a free hand out pretty much strikes me as both unethical and lazy.

So, what are you paying a qualified, experienced Industrial Maintenance worker? Someone with say 15-20 years doing that type of work in a manufacturing factory.

$24/hr We are a bakery, we don't have a NASCAR team. Sounds like fair pay to me. Quite comparable to what our company pays, yet higher than I expected. We're having the same problem in Oklahoma. Out here, the natural gas companies (oil companies) are paying big bucks to any warm body they can find. They've absorbed the few qualified folks(they are seeking the same basic skill set) and are now hiring folks who are only marginally qualified(or less). A good friend and co-worker has worked in this factory doing maintenance work for 35 years. His son has no college education, and no skills to speak of, yet he got a job working for an oil company checking Gas Wells. He has a company truck, tools, and makes more than his dad does. -Scott
