Been looking for an 1100 Spirit/ACE as a stable mate and knockaround bike.  Finding bikes on ebay and local stealers that are 7 to 10 years old and they want over $5,000 for these things.  Grant it, the one's I am looking at have less than 30K miles on them, but that's too much money.  I've bid $3,000 for a 2001 Spirit with 26K miles and didn't hit the reserve.  Dealer in Danbury, CT wanted $6,000 for a 2004.

I think the prices are high on the used bikes because the prices are just stupidly high for new ones.

I agree... but those are mostly dealer asking prices and have wiggle room (I Hope). Of course the dealers won't give ya squat on a trade or buy back, but....,.expect more than top dollar as their asking price.   Wait til Spring when the weather breaks and prices will jump a bit more.....

I would indeed agree with "stupily high prices on newer bikes" and high prices on used one's..Any reasonably priced used bike is most likely privately owned and may only last a day before being sold..at least that's been my experience on the bikes I have called on...though I do do most of my shopping on craigslist..

We got a one-owner 2000 VT1100 Tourer last April (off craigslist) for less than $5K.  It had just over 9,000 miles, had just received a major service from sitting a while, and came with Cobra floorboards, heel-toe shifter, fork-mounted deflectors, luggage rack, and Cobra bag lid racks.  They also threw in a Joe Rocket jacket, two helmets, and a pair of riding boots.  It's a sweet bike.  Looks great, rides great, wind protection is great, but it feels like it's missing four cylinders.

G-man -

I'm not sure if prices are just plain higher out east, but November 29, 2009, I helped my oldest son buy a 2000 Shadow Spirit from a local deal here for just over $4300 with  11,000 miles on it...

But the dealer did say by Spring of 2010, they would have marked it up to over $5,000....

Here's a pic of it about ten minutes after he drove it home.. it was 30° that day, but he didn't care.

I wish there was a market for used bikes here.  I have a beautiful 2004 Vulcan 1500 classic that has 16,000 miles on it with tons of extras that nobody is interested in.  One of my friends mentioned an 1100 shadow for sell loaded.  I will try to remember who, where and how much.

G-man, you might think about a 750 Shadow. I don`t know how you plan on riding, but the 750`s are a great little bike. After riding a Valk. you will not like the Vibes that the 1100 Spirit has. For some , the 750 is a smoother ride and has good power solo riding. The only reason I sold my 1100 Spirit was the "VIBES". At higher RPM`s it was not a joy to ride.  Sad As for as power, it had 'gobs" and would pull stumbs out of the ground, not really but it had a lot of low end .
Good luck on your search .

Yes, the 750's are great bikes, but I'm too big for those.  I had a 750 ACE for about 6 months and did everything I could to make the bike "bigger"....forward controls, seat, taller bars, etc.  Felt like I was riding something I had outgrown. (I'm 6'4", 230 lbs)

WOW!!
I've tried to unload my 98 1100 Shadow ACE with 26k, for a while and finally gave up. I figured the market would rebound on those before anything else. Beautiful green and cream.
Matches the Valkyrie, doncha know. I refer to it as the "mini bike".
Now I want a hunnertmilloingazzillion dollars and thirty eight cents.
I hate to think I'd park the Valk because the shadow gets better milage.

I've seen pictures of the one Normandog is talking about above ....That would be one I'd jump on if I was looking for a Shadow...It's a nice Tourer model with the same hard saddlebags that come on the Valkyrie Tourer.

Paul now rides a Valkyrie.

Yes, it is.  The 1100 is longer from the seat to the triple tree which gives you more room.

For what those dealers are asking I've seen VTX1800s go for just a tick higher.

I'm trying to buy locally in case the bike is a dog.  But I did send a note to Normandog at his and Joe's advice as I trust yous guys fully!

I was the high bidder on two 10 year old Shadows with 20something thousand miles on them(a Spirit and an AERO) on ebay.  Both never reached reserve.  I placed a max bid of $3K on both and the bidding stopped at $2.5K on both.  $2.5K seems very reasonable for a freaking 10 year old motorcycle that only has 2 wheels, no electric locks or window, no carpeting, no stereo, no a/c........

I don't think you could beat the deal on Normandog's neighbor's bike with it being the Tourer model as stated above it's the same saddlebags as what comes on the Valkyrie Tourer so that's a $700.00 plus bonus on the bike and they would fit the Valk perfect with correct stays. I also feel cash will talk on this bike so I'm bettin' a sweet deal can be had.....When you come get it let us know maybe we can ride up for supper together  cooldude

THAT was the exact question I had.  I knew the bags were the same, but if the hardware to hang them is the same, I would switch them the the Valkyrie and use my throwovers on the smaller 1100!  What color is the bike?

Wow I can't believe the prices being asked for those Shadows!

I paid $4,000 for this '03 off of Craig's list in '09...

It was almost completely stock with around 10,000mi on the odometer.  I added everything else including Cobra slash cut pipes and new jets (not shown).  Gets around 44mpg overall...maybe that's why they're holding their value!  Remember when fuel prices first jumped a few years ago?  Motorcycle dealers couldn't keep some bikes in stock!

I'm not sure on the hardware however I'm thinking that they are NOT the same....I've seen several stays for the Tourer / Interstate ( either will work with the saddlebags )on E-Bay go for around $275.00 / $325.00....I'm looking for the pictures Normandog sent me when my friend Paul was looking for another Shadow without any luck that was awhile ago  Undecided  I'm not 100% sure however I'm thinking Honda called it ......Pearl Jade Green with Pearl Ivory Cream
