I have a 1998 standard... and a wonderful old gal she is.
Will the 1999 interstate seats fit my bike.
Other than the fact the IS seat is one unit, is there a significant difference between the two?

The IS seat will fit. The rear mounting bracket of the IS seat will need to be reworked to hit the bolt in the fender and there will be about 3/4 in. gap between the seat and the tank because the IS tank is bigger (taller with different radius at the rear). It will not be as easy to access the battery as taking the seat off will require unbolting the rear. It will be way more comfortable though.

If your going to replace the seat on the 98 look at the post upgarding to a 2000 OEM or later stock seat. Starting in 2000 honda changed the design slightly making the seat more comfortable and it fits the earlier models.

I have an interstate seat on my tourer and didn't bother to use the rear bolt. That way I can remove it just like the stock seat. It surely isn't going to fall off. You will have a 1/2 inch gap between the tank and the front of the seat because the interstate has a larger tank.

All I/S seats will fit all Valkyrie models. Yes there may be a small gap at the tank/seat interface. The I/S seats do not really need a rear mount as they lock in front as all Valks but also lock into the seat mounts on all the fenders. The rear of the I/S seat will not move if properly installed and latched. See the seat on my SuperValk If your interested, PM me for a I/S seat that I'd sell for $30.00 plus shipping

When I put an IS seat on my 98 std., I had to make a bracket to bolt the seat to the rear fender. The stock IS seat with its rear mounting bracket extends over an inch past the seat mounting bolt hole in the top of the rear fender. Otherwise, it was only attached to the bike at the front of the seat (behind the tank) as was my stock seat. I was/am not comfortable with riding on a seat attached to my bike only at one end.

The I/S seat does indeed have a 'slide-in' mount onto the trunk mount. But there is also a center mount that fits on to the fender and the front latch mount.

Even though the I/S tank is greater capacity the front to rear dimension is constant.
The Interstate seat hugs the back of the gas tank slightly while the standard seat butts up to the tank.
All seats will mount on all Valkyries.
The Interstate seat has an additional fastener at the rear which attaches to the Interstate trunk mounting frame. With no extra accommodation the Interstate seat will be non-attached at the rear on a Valkyrie other that an Interstate.

IS tank is the same length as Std/Tourer but taller at the rear (different radius) as the increased size in the IS tank has to come somewhere. The IS seat does not use the same mounting point in the rear as the Std/Tourer when it is on an IS. The rear mounting points are different. See the pic.[imghttp://vrcc.photostash.com/vrcc_29849/IS%20%20seat%20005.JPG[/img]http:// The IS rear bracket extends past the mounting point of the Std/Tourer and needs to be modified to use the Std/Tourer mounting point. If you leave it unattached the rear third (or so) of the seat has room to move (and does) with a passenger on. Pic is of my 98 Std. with IS seat. All that being said, the IS seat was, IMHO, more comfortable than my stock seat.

A standard/tourer seat of the Corbin or Ultimate brand will not fit with a Intersate tank unless you space the latch hook on the bottom of the seat by about an inch. The other option is to unstaple the seat material and modify the pan. I have used both these methods. I used a spacer on an Ultimate Low Boy seat on my 2000 IS and modified Corbin pan on my 97 standard (which has an IS tank on it)
