I need a new pair of glasses and the stinking insurance only pay a $100 bucks on frames. It's going to run me with a no line bifocal, transition tint and a polycarbonate protector over $200 out of pocket at wally world. Does anybody get there glasses somewhere else for cheaper? Enquiring 50 year old recently needs to know.

Are you far..or near-sighted? If you're near-sighted you can now get soft contacts that give you bifocal ability. I used to wear them about 12 years ago and had some early versions of the bifocals in soft contacts...never had to use my $10 drug store cheaters with them. Then when the lasik surgery came out, I had that done. What a change....on the way home I was reading license plates a half block ahead without any glasses. Now, due to age I use the cheaters for reading most of the time, but still can pass the driver's test without glasses. I'm still around 20/20 but with a little astigmatism in one eye. But....haven't had to wear glasses or contacts all the time since I was 59....be 73 shortly. Money well spent....and saved.

I'm far sighted with a small prescription on top.

I wear no-line trifocals, with the anti-glare, anti scratch, polycarbonate lightweight lenses and mine cost me $312 at Wally World last March. I don't have any vision insurance, so its all out-of-pocket.

Try Pearl Vision. I found them to be about 1/4 the cost of many other places when I was getting glasses for my son. I got the lasik back around 99 or 2000 when I was in my early forties. Yeh I had to get cheaters for reading as I got older. Fine with me and what a relief to get that 18 hour albatross off my nose! (I was legally blind without the glasses before lasik) Took me a while to quit groping around on the night stand in the morning for my glasses, tho.

Prices are going to vary, especially with all the "extras" you prefer. Shop around, but considerer Lasik as a more permanent option. That way you will never sit on your glasses, have them fly off while riding, and you can buy really cool sunglasses whenever you go to a M/C rally or as styles and your tastes change. JMHO

My wife and I have used this site http://www.zennioptical.com/ for all of our lenses and frames for the last couple of years and considering on this site you can get no line bifocals, with anti glare, scratch resistant coatings and free case shipped to your door for around $60 or under depending on your choice we both were able to get backup pairs. Don’t know if your insurance will pay using this site but good lenses and frames (we go to wal mart for free adjustments) Otherwise you might try http://www.39dollarglasses.com/ <<< they end up costing more than zenni after you add on the options.

The last couple of times I bought glasses (no line bifocals), I found the best price at JC Penny (and I think Sears before that). Worth a walk to all the stores in the mall.

I just got my first set of progressive lenses from Walmart. They SUCK. I can't see a computer screen. The focal point is so narrow I have to move my head around to keep moving my focal point.
I'm going to have to take these back. I went back and complained and their only response was "well, some people can't adjust to them". Adjust to them? Really? You mean I am supposed to learn to like not seeing as well as I did before?
$340 and I can't wear them.

I had the dr give me a prescription for a set of single vision lenses set up for sitting at the computer (mostly at work ALL day) and ordered them at zenni complete for about $30!

I am 51 now, but the year I turned forty I started needing reading glasses. Bought dozens of them at Costco and had them all over the house and my workplace. When I was 45 I got Lasik done on one eye only, so that one is my "reading" eye and the other my "distance" eye. Works great for me-I have to shut one eye to remember which is which.

So that you don't have to have someone measure your pupil distance, have the doctor do it for you when you get your prescription. I am quite happy with mine.

I really don't think you will be disappointed, many of our friends/family have been getting theirs there also and so far all are happy with their purchase.

I went to Sam's club today. They have frames as cheap/low as $20.00.
I can get a complete pair of polarized prescription sunglasses for $95.00 plus tax and license. That's MY cost, ZERO contribution from the insurance company.
Of course the cost goes up if I get a more expensive frame or add scratch resistant or the other options that they always try to sell me.

JC Pennys or Sears Optical. They seem to run sales all the time. Last year I got 2 pair of single vision for $99. Have also seen 2 pair of bifocals for $110. Worth Looking at. (pun intended).

Depends on what you really need. I have progressive bifocals from Walmart for about $180, but I drive (and passed my eye test at DMV) with cheaters I got at Dollarama for a buck. Fred.

Jess I have to find a plan of attack though Because the last time I went in to complain the tech told me that if I couldn't "get used to them" I would have to go with hard line trifocals. I really don't want trifocals. So I need to figure out the smooth path to a resolution. I think maybe start with the DR that wrote the prescription. And ask him why it is that I can't see with the glasses he prescribed.

I just got my first set of progressive lenses from Walmart. They SUCK... Adjust to them? Really? You mean I am supposed to learn to like not seeing as well as I did before? Yep, basically. In my case it's especially frustrating, because the left eye, which didn't go through the retinal detachment of the right eye, is still has 20/15 vision. So that "perfect" eye now has this blurry piece of glass in front of it. I did get used to the progressives, but mostly because I never wore glasses before and have never worn bifocals. But the focus spot is a tiny dot and your brain needs a couple of months to learn to find it without thinking. Reading with progressives is interesting because only one word of any sentence is in focus. For reading or working on my motorcycle, I have regular single focus reading glasses. But progressives are deadly dangerous on a motorcycle because there is no peripheral vision. Anything outside of that pea-sized sweet spot is completely out of focus. Pulling into traffic I could miss an entire fleet of cement trucks. And the anti-glare coating is a scam. It is designed to degrade within 12 months so you have to buy new glasses. Even if I clean my glasses once an hour it's still like looking through a 12 year-old Valkyrie windshield.

I can't believe this is correct. I never see my wife moving her head from side to side to read. I've also figured out that if my monitor is about 32 inches from me I can see it. Can't do that with my laptop though.
