Though much time has passed, Three Dog Night was one of my favorites.  Their's was actually the last live concert I attended before entering the Marines.  Really enjoyed all their music and can't remember a single tune I didn't like.  Thanks for posting this, brought back some fond memories.

There was a (non-talent) contest in High School. Me and my buddies rolled down the isle
on our non-cranked dirt bikes jumped on stage and sang "On the Cover Of The Dirt Bike Mag"...

I couldn't google it up...

We take all kind of spills to give us all kind of thrills
But the thrill we've never known
Is the thrill that'll get you when you get your picture
On the cover of the Dirt Bike Mag

Steve, you're absolutely right - it was Randy Newman.
Interesting, I always thought it was Shel. Just now I googled, "shel silverstien + mama told me" and got this;
Shel Silverstein (1932-1999) By Inez Ramsey
Shel passed away from a heart attack on May 10, 1999. Shelly Silverstein, most commonly known as Shel Silverstein, was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1932. He is best known in children's literature for his poetry; however, he was also a cartoonist, composer, lyricist and folksinger. His poem, The Unicorn Song, was recorded by the Irish Rovers. Other hit songs included "A Boy Named Sue" and "The Cover of the Rollin' Stone" for Dr. Hook. He composed the music for the movies, Ned Kelly (1970), Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Such Terrible Things About Me? (1971), and Thieves (1977). He composed the music for the film, Postcards from the Edge for which he received a nomination for an Academy Award in Music for the song, "I'm Checkin Out." A man of many talents, he wrote the screenplay for the film, Things Change (1988).

so I googled, "randy newman + mama told me"
Newman says that the song was inspired by his own lighthearted reflection on the Los Angeles music scene of the late 1960s. However, the song is not strictly autobiographical; Newman uses a green narrator, a sheltered and extraordinarily straight-laced young man, who recounts what is presumably his first "wild" party in the big city. The young man is so shocked and appalled by everything he sees (including cigarette-smoking, whiskey-drinking, drunkenness, and loud music) that--in the well-known chorus of the song--he recalls his "mama told [him] not to come."

The first recording of "Mama Told Me Not to Come" was made by Eric Burdon & The Animals. A scheduled single-release of September 1966 was withdrawn[1] but the song was eventually included on their 1967 album Eric Is Here.

Newman's own version of his song was released on the 1970 album 12 Songs and was characterized by Newman's mid-tempo, rollicking piano accompaniment as well as Ry Cooder's understated slide guitar part, both of which give the song the feel of a bluesy Ray Charles-style R&B number.

This is amazing, as I never knew Randy Newman and Shel were the same person ('specially since Shel is around 6 ft. tall)  2funny
