rear tire on my valk has what appear to be rub marks on the outside edge of the tread area.iT HAS correct tire size, proper inflation, and looking up inside the fender well I can see no area that looks to be rubbing .The mark is smooth and almost shiny, what ever is rubbing is not actually cutting into the rubber ,just polishing it.I am at my wits end.Only thing I can think of is the shocks set to low.when my wife and I ride.Im 210 she is 110.The marks are equal on both sides and are about 2 inches wide.and run completly  around the tire  .Any suggestions???

If the rub is on the sidewall make sure your air pressure gauge is OK. I had a car tire on the Valk that would show an occasional rub mark on one side and it was low air pressure. With the correct tire that probably isn't your problem. Cold air temps will drop the air pressure.

If the marks are on both sides of the tire it can not be the swing arm.

Run your hand all the way around the fender inside, both sides.    I ran over a plastic bag a long time ago and it stuck, then dropped down over the edge of the tire.

does the rear fender have the pieces of rubber glued to the underside like the front fender? my front had a rub ~ that rubber came loose and was rubbing the tire.

I doubt it is this - but any chance it's the nut cage inside the rear fender?

My neighbor and I go riding every chance we get, as long as there is no snow/ice on the road..both of us are having that type of "rubbing" show up on our bikes..it IS NOT actual rubbing of the tire, it only shows up on the right hand side of the tire, much easier to see on the front..I can find no mechanical reason for it...I believe it is coming from the stuff on the roads. though I have no idea why it would only be on one side not both..must have something to do with the crown of the highway..since we've had snow, roads treated, etc..I have noticed it after every ride..

I cannot comment on front tire rubbing.

However rear tire rubbing can occur under certain circumstances.

I am only addressing rubbing on the swingarm.

Because of manufacturing practices the swingarms are all a little different from each other. In some instances the tire may run close to the swingarm.

If you run an oversize tire, or a car tire the distance between the tire and the swingarm can be even less than design.

When you lift the bike you may find clearance and then confusion occurs since the rubbing is actually happening but you cannot find it!

The reason for this rubbing is due to the tire tread moving off center during cornering resulting in the sidewall rubbing on the swing arm. Straight line running will not cause rubbing.

The sidewall construction and sidewall stiffness directly relate to the rubbing. Air pressure in the tire can have some effect on the rubbing but is not necessarily the cure all.

Loading has no effect on this rubbing.

Remember that I am only referring to the tire rubbing on the swingarm.

I guess I got lost on this topic.

I thought someone said it was shiny type rubbing, not digging into the type type.

Could someone fill me in here please?

Thanks.

Is it maybe the wiring harness up inside the fender is loose and the tire is lightly rubbing on it.  There is definitely a wire bundle running up the right side which houses the brake and turn signal wiring.  Worth checking to see if it came a little loose.

Sorry I re read the original post and did not notice that you said on both sides I think that harness is only on the right side.  Are you talking about the area on either side of the flat spot the runs down the middle of the tire?

thank s to all of you who posted the help hints--esp thanks to RJ-the mystery has been solved--removed rear tire as RJ suggested to check the swing arm and there was a part of a mud flap ,I assume off an 18 wheeler wedged into the frt upper part of my fender and I guess when I hit a bump it would make contact with the tire sides. thanks again for all the help!!

I was close in my thoughts but didn't post. I wondered if you had parts of an Armadillo stuck in the fender well Smiley

Glad you solved the mystery.
