Its been tried, but as far as I can recall, no one has found a replacement joint that fits and is as robust as the OEM joint.

RJ  I have been trying to replace it but have had no luck finding one. I tried a few honda dealers in New Hampshire to see if they had one laying around.  Been told back ordered

This is an email to me last summer

from BZAR to me today

This is unbelievable!!!

I called HDL and they checked with their Honda rep and said that the U-joints are back ordered with an expected delivery date of FEB 2011!!!

And with pretty much everone with a Valk wanting one so they don't get stuck in the future, they will go fast once available...

There has been no follow up post on the repair or subsitute U-joint for the Valkyrie.

Someone was going to try to rebuild in their shop, and another was going to try out the 20xx Honda CR-V joint which supposedly was the same dimentions.

I still have my u-joint that I'm selling from my IS I'm wrecking, posted in the classifieds (I think).

If you need one, there is one just posted on ebay today, and I think one or two more may still be in the auction phase.

If someone NEEDS one, so they can ride, post  a new thread on here, and someone may well let you have one from their stockpile.

I had a local drive line shop install the u-joint from a Honda CR-V into the OEM yokes last fall.  I think I've got around 2k on it now with no problems.  Cost me $60.

Do like I did and go to a Trike Shop. I found a like new take-off u-joint from a 1500 Goldwing for $40 .... The u-joints are same for Valkyrie & 1500 Wings.

My understanding was that mother Honda had some sort of trouble with the manufacturer of those... as a result, they had to seek a new vendor willing to make them to Big Red's mighty specs...

Now... if it IS true, this same part fits the 1500 Goldwings and I believe it is... that is a huge incentive for Honda to get these replacements back on the shelf.  The GL1500 Goldwings were in continuous production from 1988 to 2000 and represents millions of machines out there.  That is a HUGE market segment to just "ignore."  By comparison, the Valkyrie market is tiny.... but will undoubtedly benefit from having a large number of inter-changable parts with the GW's!  I have to admit this figure highly in my decision to buy one...

Sodbuster:  To your knowledge has anyone used the part # 644090 u-joint in a Valk?  If so, what has been the experience?

Not to my knowledge but then I haven't been monitoring who's buying that number either. That number ( 644090) is most likely a bikebandit p/n. I have done some extensive searching on the web and found that at one time the early GL1500 Goldwing's u-joint was different than the Valkyrie (a little smaller....same splines) but when the Valkyrie came out they shared the same part number. The Valkyie u-joint is a little beefier than the earlier Goldwing u-joint but now share the same part number.

I just went into HDL and looked up part number for 1988 GW, 1995 GW, 1999 GW, & 1999 Valkyrie .... same part number for Yoke, Joint (40200-MZO-AOO)

Also, I have read on some Goldwing forums where someone replaced their older Wing u-joint with a newer beefier u-joint and had trouble fitting the boot over the knuckles.

Check out these threads ....

I have a wing too and I buy A LOT of parts from cyclemaxohio.com. (a LOT of parts!)

They have a Honda fiche system like many vendors and I have always found their pricing to be great.  There is a back door way of sneaking in to look at parts that fit bikes other than just Wings...  i have ordered a good number of parts for my VT1100 and my Valk from this source.

Oddly... they show that part number: 40200-MZ0-A00 as being 'available!'

Might be a mistake... but maybe not.  I have NEVER seen a part on their fiche system show up that I when I ordered it... I didn't receive it.

 Just interesting!

Here: http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com/cyclemaxohio/Honda_OEM/HondaMC.asp?Type=13&A=267&B=52

BTW... the joint fits the wing okay... you just have to buy a valk boo too...

Yep!  Just went and put one on hold.

I'm not sure if HDL is still gonna send me one that was back ordered last year!

If not, I would have ordered it right now!
