I have seen an ad for what I believe is a hydrolock damaged '98 Valk.  What parts should I expect to replace?  Is the starter gear damaged or is it the gear on the flywheel that goes?  Is anyone able to take a guess as to the cost of the parts?  Thanx, G

Worst case seniaro, whole engine.

Best, starter.

Pull the plugs and with the bike in a higher than 1st gear, turn the engine over by rolling the bike.

I would think if there is internal damage, then it may not turn over. If it does, then hopefully it's limited to the starter area.

Generally the starter drive gear and planetary gear will loose a tooth or two.. There have been a couple instances of engine case damage.. Whatever is damaged, the case has to come apart..You could remove the starter and check the drive gears but you may not be able to see if the case is damaged..

There's an engine in the classifieds for $755 (no affiliation, blah, blah, blah).  You could also check Pinwall - I think I've seen some there for around the $800 range.

I just finished pulling one apart... What normally breaks is 1 of 3 peaces costing between
$20. to $100. to $200....  This is parts only... You DO NOT have to split the cases...
You do have to pull the motor....

This guy wants $3500 for a '98 with 16k.  Sounds like a hydrolock issue.  What do you think something like this is worth as it sits?  He says 1k do it yourself or 2k for a mechanic to fix it.  I know I can fix it but the motor does not run so it is kind of a pig in a poke.

If it's in good shape other than the possible hydrolock I would buy it in a heartbeat for $3500.  Maybe you could give me the guy's number  Grin.

No problem, I'll get you his # right after I am through with him  coolsmiley

Offer the guy $3000 to take it off his hands.  If it is good shape and has a clear title then it is probably a good deal.  You didn't say if it was a standard/tourer or the color scheme.  That could play a part.

Even if you got it and decided not to fix it, you could probably part it out and get your money back.  Especially if it has any hard-to-find bright shiny pieces.  Check around on this board for the last few E-bay posts.  Some parts are going for crazy high $$$.

Even if the motor is toast, the rest of the bike would be worth alot more parted out.  But putting in a different motor would be the way to go.  That's if it's a STD.  If it's a TOURER or I/S, even better.

Bilks,  I love your saying about money and church.   Grin cooldude

Looks like the case is broken in the pics?  Did you fix it, replace it or just used it as is?

I pulled the motor out when I did mine. Did you have any trouble getting it apart and together the way you did it? Did you have enough room to use an impact gun?

 Undecided

All was repaired, the cogs were copied and replaced the originals. I was not involved in the "surgery" my local French mechanic was the bike Doctor! Did a fantastic job and the bike runs sweet now!

If I'm looking at the pictures right, You didn't have to pull the engine, just the rear drive unit and rear case apart??
