Hi, I know opinions will vary, but what kind of oil is popular with the Valkyrie? I use Mobil 1 4T racing oil in my 1800 VTX and it's good oil but expensive, about $10 a qrt. I need to find quality oil just a little less expensive!  Wink

I like the Mobil 1 you are using now but you can't go wrong with Rotella 5W40 synthetic diesel oil. About $20 a gallon at WallyWorld. cooldude

Any diesel oil will work well. the 5w40 is a bit light weight for my money. Standard diesel oils are 15w40, they have no moly which can screw up your wet clutch and they're plenty heavy duty enough for Valks. Of course, opinions on this subject vary quite a bit  Roll Eyes

Yeah as long as it doesn't say energy conservative it won't hurt the clutch. If I do go with Rotella, I think I'll get 15/40.  Wink

Ya, Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic is what I am using with good results.  A little more tranny noise than with the Mobil 1 but for the price it is good.  http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=rotella-en&FC2=/rotella-en/html/iwgen/products/zzz_lhn.html&FC3=/rotella-en/html/iwgen/products/t6_detail.html

The #w is the winter rating, not the weight of the oil. The 2nd #, the 40, is the oil weight (thickness) and is the same in both examples. The 5w is 40 weight oil at 5', and the 15w is 40 weight at 15', IF my memory is right. Either way, the 5w is for colder tempurtures than the 15w.

The first number is the oils' viscosity (thickness) at 0° Fahrenheit and the second number is the oils' viscosity at 212° Fahrenheit.

for as often as you change the oil, the difference in price doesn't matter much.

I use the 4T and don't mind a few extra dollars every year.

YMMV

I use the 10w40 4T. Just curious, how many miles do you log before a filter and or oil change? A buddy of mine changes the filter @ 4,000 and changes oil & filter @ 8,000. I am kinda scared to go that far between oil changes. Any thoughts?

Thanks guys for all your input! I think I might  try Rotella, after all it's a lot cheaper and fully synthetic. cooldude

Used to use Rotella T synthetic until my local Walmart stopped carrying it. After looking for a replacement, I've been using a 10-40 Mobil1 Synthetic for Turbo Diesel and experienced the smoothest shifting transmission ever.

Honda recommends we change oil every 8000 miles. With the synthetic oils why go less?

It would seem to me to be a better idea to "change the oil FILTER every 4K and the OIL EVERY 8K!
I often change the filter at 3K and the oil at 6K.  Of course, I'm running regular 20/50 "dino" oil, but it's done pretty well, as the engine has 230K on it and has never been opened, except for the valve covers.  By-the-way, she's still running with the original clutch too.

Been using Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic from Wally world $25 in 5 qt jug for years in all my Valks.  Best stuff I've ever used along with a mobil 1 filter I've been VERY happy.

Look at it this way.....the book says change it @ 8,000 miles on DINO oil.  If you are using sythetic, you can easily go higher than 8,000.  A filter change inbetween seems like a reasonable thing if you go that long, especially if you use the supertec ones from Wally World  6607 (just like the honda ones without all the extra expense).  I know many riders that (if synthetic) change oil @ 10,000 miles or every year whichever comes first

That all being said I dont do a filter change inbetween but I dont go past 8K either........I change the oil and filter somewhere between 6 and 8K and I use Mobile 1 oil and WalMart filters........quite and smooth and Im at 120K miles
