I personally like to hold my prospective purchase in my hands and inspect it all over and inside out without disassembling it, of course.  I had just as soon have a "used" firearm as a new one, just as long as it appears new or close to it.  Most people don't really use a gun.  They just keep it until they loose interest or find something else that they think would be more to their liking.  Except for new, the internet is out for me, no matter what the price.  Oh yes, and one of the many attributes of owning a Valkyrie is that the added weight of a handgun or two discretely placed in one's pockets does not hamper it's performance in the least...JTL Smiley (Maybe now, such trivia will be accepted just as well as "How do I fix my car, joke of the day, or my favorite singer, etc., etc.) Smiley

I've purchased new off Gunbroker.com with good success and $$ savings over local shop or gunshow.  Go to a local shop that has a range and most will have a range gun similar to what you are interested in that you can fire.

For me?  Internet = not generally......Gun Show = can have some good prices but unless you know the person/store you purchased from any follow up discussions after purchase might be difficult....Local Gun Shop = I've visited several in my area and found one that will match or beat the best price I've found at competing stores including the visiting gun shows...they offer a "Davidson's Lifetime Replacement Guarantee"** with all of their sales which makes any follow up issues a breeze to deal with....also building up a relationship with the owners is a plus too.....not sure how often you would be returning to the shop after buying but if you have future needs it can be a plus.....

** Davidson's does sell online but I like to do the "touchy - feely" before I buy....could always do this at a gun show or other gun store and then order online but still have to deal with the mailing /shipping.....

Check out their website and their guarantee....my local gun shop buys from them and sells to the general public and the guarantee passes to the ultimate buyer....

depends if you know what you're looking for and what to look for.  Me, used, and I stay away from the gun shops except to shop, not buy.  Around here we have gun shows where you can buy from individuals. We also have a local internet gun "craiglist"  Buying from an individual is most always less expensive and less hassles.

I go for a mixture of local, gun show, and internet...

Check out your local gun shops, find one that you like, has good people that are helpful, and try to give them at least SOME of your business so that the good, friendly, helpful local folks will be there for ya' when ya' need 'em.

I also have bought a few over the internet, but ya' obviously need to make sure you have a good FFL lined up that isn't going to gouge you over the transfer. Having a friend that has one and owes ya' a few favors is always a GOOD thing to have!

Gun shows are great for checking out as many makes, models, variants as possible in one day to see what specifically you REALLY want. If there's one near you coming up, I'd hit that firs,t if for nothing else then to walk around and compare and see what subtle differences in models, or even within models, are things you really DO want or really want to avoid...

Maybe I'm way off base, but I always consider this a forum for a group of friends who happen to own or at some point in time were interested in Valkyries...

I'm probably wrong in my thinking but during this PMS season for most of us, I'd much rather see non relevant postings about guns, help, looking for, etc than all the down and dirty political and religious discussions (rants) that we've had in the past.

I've been on other motorcycle forums and during the winter, they go dormant.

If I know what I want, then I shop price.
Pistols and revolvers are really a personal preferance thing, IMHO it is better to buy hands on. I shop hands on more often than not. As a bonus, there are 2 LGS's near me that are about as resonable in price as anywhere.

While cruising the Florida GUN BOARDs I found out that I don't need to take the CCW course to get my CCW again. I had a CCW a long time ago but let it expire. I didn't keep any of the documents because I was told back then that they were not going to work again, and I had to keep my CCW current to avoid taking the class again.
I just forund out that ANY gun safety class will do. I took the hunters safety course with my son in New York back in 1990. I called and they said that was fine.

But they are so back logged it will take 30-45 days to get approved.  tickedoff

Once again, I agree with Serk.

Local shops should be supported, but the ones around here are expensive for almost everything, compared to what you can do on-line or at shows.  If you are going to buy a well known top-maker weapon, (like Smith, Ruger, SprArmory, Beretta, Kahr, etc) there is really no need to handle the exact gun you get.... you can go to a shop and handle the same gun to see if you like it, and fit to hand.

Of course private sales, mostly at shows, are best prices and no official paperwork, but you need to know what you are doing, and have to be careful of stolen or wanted guns.

Some shops have pretty large used (often consignment) selections, and you can get some nice stuff, but again, locally for me, prices are often much higher than reasonable.  But if you have a few shops around, it would still be a good idea to spend a day going to all of them to look over what they have.  If you see something you especially like, go home and look up the pistol on line to see what going prices are (and if there are any 'issues' or problem areas to look for), then go back and make an offer.

One thing to watch out for, there are some (sometimes extremely) nice auto pistols out there that are now out of production, and you can get one for a good price, but then you find it impossible or very expensive to find any additional magazines for it (and perhaps other parts).  Some safe queens go to the range once in a long while, but are never going to to be a primary go-to defense weapon.  For them, two mags are adequate.  But if I was going to buy an out of production H & K  double stack auto, I want 5/6 or more mags for it (and they can be $100 a copy).

My local shows always are attended by a large FFL dealer (from way downstate), he is 10-15% cheaper than everyone/everywhere.  If I want a specific new firearm, I call him up and arrange for him to have the exact make and model I want at the next local show.  This works best for me.

Hey Jeff, in VA, all I had to produce (for the CCW safety course requirement) was my military DD Form 214, which showed the award of the expert ribbon for both pistol and rifle.  (Rifle alone would not be sufficient for a CCW handgun permit)

And this is true in VA even if your handgun marksmanship badge was awarded in WWI.

This may have already been said, only in a different manner. . . but, NOTHING replaces a GOOD Gun Shop, staffed with friendly, ‘like-thinking men’ who you can talk with and exchange ideas and experiences. Having said that; ‘good’ gun shops are about as rare as Valkyries on a late night summer cruise by yourself. They’re out there . . . but you just don’t run across them all that often. I was lucky and recently “found” an old fashion gun shop literally stuffed full of every kind of gun you can imagine. I had been to about a ½ dozen different shops in the area. Some had guns, but were staffed with idiots. Most of them however, just didn’t carry that much stock. They all promised they could get whatever I wanted, but I need to hold it in my hands.  Then I attended a gun show and found a dealer who had a shop. It was 35 miles from my home, but when I went there, the place was fantastic. As it happens, the manger was waiting on me. I knew what I wanted and he made me a good offer. I pressed for more – and a few add-ons – and we had a deal. I ended up getting the gun for less than it would have cost on line. So, ‘if’ you can find one, I would always say go to a local dealer first.

Yup, you said it a lot better than I did, but definitely... There are a handful of shops near me that when I walk in, they know me, I know them, they ask how the bike's doing, where my daughter is (If she's not with me), etc... It's worth spending an extra $20 on the occasional gun to be able to know that when something goes wrong, I can walk in, and I'll be taken care of right then and there on the spot instead of dealing with a faceless company over the phone from across the country.

Plus if nothing else, the friendly gun shops around me make GREAT "I wanna go for a ride, but don't have a real destination" rides! (Like I did yesterday when that NAA followed me home... Wink )

I prefer to buy used firearms from individuals, mostly from our local free internet classifieds which has a sporting goods section. I will communicate with them vie "E" mail, then usually meet in a public place such as a convenience store parking lot so neither of us has to expose the whereabouts of our homes.

If I'm buying new I go to a large (Gander Mountain type) store and ask to handle the firearm I'm interested in. Then I call a couple small gun shops and see if they can order the gun and beat the price. Usually they can and I get to support the little guy that way.

I seldom go to gun shows. I don't find many good deals there and I don't care much for crowds anyway.

Yep. I've got a favorite gun shop in Marshall Indiana. The owner is a friend who knows me and my family. And....I get a bang out of seeing my Valk parked in the gravel lot next to an Amish buggy or two, and once, even a lone chicken wandering around. The Amish don't pay much attention to the Valk but their horses sure stare at it.

I still get kidded about breakin' my leg virtually every time I stop in. "Trick Ridin'" as the owner calls it. Grin

And, if I or one of my sons wants to order a firearm, we can do it over the phone because he knows us and knows we'll show up with money when it comes in.

Shop around on line first, Google and Gunbroker.com are good research tools, get an idea of what you want and the prices, go to a gun show or local dealer to fondle it and check how it fits you.  Price is negotiable,  and most of my local dealers will match an online price or other local offer.

You can talk Cars and Bikes over at AR15.com  cooldude

Jeff  In all my years I have never found "a deal" on any firearm at a show.  Most times after looking all over there was very little difference in price.  I have never bought off of the internet but I do see some savings from time to time.  I have picked out some good shops in my area and bought from them.

What are you looking for?

Mase

.45 auto

Thinking about checking out a Taurus PT745
I never had any trouble with my old Taurus PT945

Reasonable price good reviews.

The PT945 was just to big to carry.

Thoughts?

I'm going to try those out too. But to be honest the grip safety and the funky trigger safety are a bit... well... funky.

I was all set on the XD's till I saw a few videos on it.

For a home defense pistol a Para Ordnance Light Double Action in 45 acp is a great gun. Still got the grip safety of the 1911 but can be kept hammer down, safety on, unlike a 1911. Mine holds 13 rounds in the clip and one in the pipe and has a trigger like a "tuned revolver". It's also a very fun gun to shoot.

Jeff,
Here is a link to one of the newer gun sites. It is set up basically like Craigs list. I have been watching it for a few months now and they are growing by leaps and bounds. The nice thing is that you can shop local even though it is a national board. Just like most boards, there are some areas that get heavier traffic than others.
