I ride a 99 tour and I did not do a nut cage mod and I run the Avon cobra or venom or whatever they are calling it now days. It is a 200. I weigh 330 pounds and the wife weighs just a bit over 130 and we ride two up and I have never noticed any problems with rubbing or anything.

I ran and wore out a Metzler 200/60. I believe it could got by without it. I did the nut cage mod just in case. Per what I have read here. But, I am back to the stock180/70 size tire. I like the taller profile for cornering. The 200 looks bada$$, but it gives no more miles or better handling. Just my take.

In rare cases you may experience rubbing but generally speaking there should be no problem with rubbing the nut cages.

It mainly occurs on the right side so there would only be the need to remove the one!

Only running the tire will reveal if you need to remove the nut cage.

Much depends upon the fender itself and whether or not it is centered accurately.

There hasn't been any reports of the nut cage doing any damage to the tires, just mainly restricted to a buffing of the tire and that only when going over a bump or when you're loaded down.

Not a big worry with a 200 size tire. Remember that a lot of riders use a 205 size car tire which is even larger and doesn't present any problems except a nut cage removal occasionally.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I had the Metzler 200 a few years ago. Did not rub 1 up. 2 up it smoked like hell from rubbing. If you are 200 lbs and gonna carry a passenger and or luggage, i'd do it. If you are solo at 150 lbs, dont worry about it. It is far more easier to do when the tire is off now then it will be 2 days later when she rubs. Be proactive, not reactive.  cooldude

It is not necessary to remove the tire to do a nut cage removal.

Simply remove the rear half of the rear fender and it becomes apparent how easy it will be.

Two fender bolts and the seat bolt and the fender will slide right on out revealing the nut cages,,,close up!

Justa comment!  The Phat Lady is a pretty well thought-out and built machine and IMHO you should not change or alter any part of her.  I have 231K on my '97 Tourer and still have the OEM clutch and the engine has never been open except for the valve covers about every 50K.

I agree, Earl, mostly......

Sometimes if you can tweak a little bit without altering stock can be a good thing.....

Used to be you could go a little bit bigger tires on your car, just to make it look a bit nicer..... Used to do it all the time on my older GM  cars...

The more I read, its seems that there is no yes or no answer to this question other that trying it. All of these bike are a bit different,  and I bet riding style, tire pressue, shock settings and many other variables can affect weather you can run a 200 without mods....

So I just ordered the 180.... even this tire gets comments from other riders ("dang thats a big motor!...and A big tire!)....... Pretty sure I'm going with the Bridgestone Battleaxe. or Avon Cobras

 We'll see how it works.
Thanks All for your input.

Ok, I'm getting ready to order a battleaxe myself and wonder what I may encounter since I am running 440's an inch shorter than stock.

You won't get a battlax in 180//16, but BS makes the G704 and G850 in the stock size

So.. on hold for the next week or so...
