Picked up a new firearm today. An M1 carbine for $225 from our local internet classifieds. She's no safe queen, she's a well used  beater with a broken bolt handle. She'd been a truck gun for a farmer for the past several years.

But, my youngest is a machinist and I worked as a part-time gunsmith years ago so I think she'll look good again before too much time passes. Man, I've wanted one of these for many years. Most sweet!

Sorry, no pics, my sorry internet speed makes em miserably slow to post.

Sweet! What make is she? Being a life long computer geek, one of my "One of these days" firearms has always been an IBM M1 Carbine just..... because....

Unfortunately as I'm finding out while researching it, it was made by Universal which seems to be the least desirable and the most prone to failures. It also looks like the broken bolt handle is common with them.

Oh well, it's still a 30 carbine. I've wanted one ever since seeing an old Fred Bear video where he was hunting from a boat off the Alaskan coast. The boats captain/owner? got out his 30 carbine and was shooting targets out of the air with it.

It design appears very similar to that of the mini 14/mini 30.

Frye, on an M1 Carbine, Numrich arms can supply you with any parts you may need for very reasonable prices.  I have kept all my US military firearms original, but have gone to Numrich for correct butt plates, sling swivels, handguards, mags, stuff.

Good schematic: (print or save)

When you say a broken bolt handle, I think you need a new slide (Part 37).

Note 'Universal' carbines should take USG parts, but not guaranteed.

Edit: Forget the above for your broken slide.  NOT parts interchangable.

Broken Slide on the Universal

While cleaning my Universal, I found the slide had cracked back by the charging handle.  This is one of the more common failures on Universals, and parts are difficult-to-impossible to find.  Unfortunately, this is one of the non-GI parts, and aren't available anywhere I know of.  It may be weldable

Thank you much for looking, I was on their site twice looking and came up with the same thing. Looks like it is weldable. It appears to have been repaired once in the about same place as the crack in the pic. But, it's been broken again and the entire handle section just to the right of the repair is missing and will have to be fabricated, then welded on. He had been using it for years by hooking his finger in it to load and unload the chamber. ??? Couldn't have been easy, I'll bet it was staying loaded most of the time. Looks like if it was a generation 1 instead of generation 3 the GI slide would have worked.

I just bought a fairly large industrial lathe, a 1963 Cincinnati hydroshift. 20/20 hindsight says I should have bought a mill too but I don't have room in my present mini shop for both.

Thanks Joe. I should have taken a pic before I tore it down and didn't think to do so. Unless I put a new stock on it it's not gonna look anywhere near as good as Tundra's does. That's a sharp firearm.

The guy I bought it from lived in the "Knaw Bone" area about 70 miles from here. Some of my favorite roads are between there and here. But, that don't mean much when I'm in the truck. Sad
