Obviously the tank and airbox have to come off, along with the exhaust. What I'm wondering is....does the rear wheel and driveshaft have to come out as well? Or is there enough wiggle room to move the engine forward to disengage the u-joint? I've never pulled a Valk engine, done just about everything else though, so this will be a first for me. I'm open to any suggestions or advice anyone has re. starter gear repair. Thankfully, it's not my bike but I like to be prepared if the deal goes through.

did you get the manuel? from my understanding the frame unbolts and the engine comes out sidways there should be enuff room to slip the ujoint off but i think you need to let the swingarm hang down.(thats how they change the rubber boots.
now i have seen the starter gear and clutch replacement done without pulling the engine.

I saw a starter and rear case repair (hydrolock) on an Interstate at the local dealer the other day. The engine did not come out! Wish I had paid closer attention. Good luck-no clue for adveice.

Yes Doug, in fact he called me about an hour ago and we had a good chat about it. In fact I knew right off it was TJ....because when I answered the phone he said "OK you old fart......." Nice to know you're loved, ain't it?

Dropping the motor really isn't as difficult as it seems. No you do not have to drop the rear wheel or drive shaft.
You will want to add pulling the radiator to the list of things that need to come off though.

You don't have to pull the air box off either. I did a set of OD gears on a std Valk. I left the carbs and airbox in place, I just tied them up to the frame. Dropped the motor down and out the side. I think I had the motor on the bench in about 1 1/2 hours.
No need to pull the drive the swingarm stays put.

That is the best way. No messing with the hoses, cables, adjustments! Be sure to plug the intakes! ***

I recently read the manual to see how much needs to be done to prep for pulling.
After the engine is loose, it pulls forward to clear the u-joint, then you can remove it from the frame.
Can't remember details, but it seems fairly simple.

I don't know how they could have removed the rear case without pulling the engine...

Not bad Roadkill, just about a whole bottle. Exactly my point... This isn't even a one bottle project! Why replace the gears in the bike when you can drop the motor in a few hours?

I don't know how they could have removed the rear case without pulling the engine...
I think that is referring to the clutch cover and those parts rather than the motor cases which split along a line delineated by the crankshaft. ***
